Hi all,

I've not been to RTR  but am told I should. I'd like to do caricatures at the event. Is this encouraged or a good investment? I would set up chairs near my 2000 Chinook Concourse or where appropriate. Here's some samples and I'm improving quickly:

https://www.facebook.com/michael.stancato.art/posts/351470975220058?hc_location=ufi$24 per single face. $29 for 2-5 faces on 12"x16" pastel and ink on paper. Driving my RV from CA and back I figure with gas etc... will incur about $550 based on a $1 per mile. So I need to do 20 or 30 caricatures to cover the costs. At a corporate event I did 32 faces in 4 hours, 7.5 minutes average with swanky dinner and drinks included. Do my prices or expectations seem reasonable?

How to find the percentage of RTR attendees that have a home base with wall space for caricatures versus full timers with no wall space for caricatures (although digital is available)?

Welcome to the CRVL forums Michael! It looks like a lot of fun but keep in mind many of the RTR attendees do not have very big budgets and may not be able to afford the expense of a caricature. As far as I know nobody has ever done a survey of home base verses strictly vehicle dwellers. Maybe you can just throw the idea out and see how many people are interested.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Also, The BLM does not look kindly on commercial endeavors on federal land, without a permit.

You might be better off finding space in one of the markets in Quartzite and setting up each day there.

Quartzite itself hosts several 'shows' during the winter season which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each winter.

A lot of them are living in rather large RVs and also have home bases.

The only thing you'd also have to figure out is living accommodations since you are limited to 14 days on the BLM land but you could always commute from Ehrenberg area if you needed to.

Many of the markets will let you stay in your rig in your site.  (I asked last year)

You can always go to RTR to unwind after making fun of the masses all day.  :p

I don't need one. I am funny enough looking as it is.
There are probably more people that would rather pay not to be painted.

There are people that do those caricatures near fisherman's wharf in San Francisco. It it doesn't work out for you, you can always paint yourself silver and pretend to be a robot.

People have offered services at RTR before. Haircuts, locksmithing... the running euphemism is "donation." I'm not sure why anyone would want to draw attention to federal technicalities; we're a tribe of people who some would say are skirting taxes; we exist by dismissing nagging technicalities.

Anyway, I agree that the RTR is probably not your best market. A lot of the people attending will have little money and I don't envision you making your quota. The Quartzsite tent event suggestion is maybe more workable if you can get a spot.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned about this also is that most people have a serious lack of wall space to hang anything. I know I'm getting rid of everything that isn't essential for me.

The OP brought that up in his first post.

Best to go into something prepared and knowing the facts

Thank you to everyone. I think I'll try for Quartzite next year and make sure I have a spot.
