A good place to spend 4th of July is LOLO HOTSPRINGS, MONTANA!!
Wowsies!!!
Frustrated, after a horrible job where I got paid, basically $25/day for four days straight.... and then for 4th of July week, ALL my housekeeping clients bailing on me, I figured, why in the hell am I sitting around here being pissy? What's on sale?
Turned out Lolo Hotsprings was running a Tent Camping Special: 3 days for $25!
I had the Ford Focus ZX3 packed in less than four hours, for three people (2 kids, 9 and 11)
Though I thought we would do more backpacking after our 3 days... the kids were content 100% with the pool, and I got GOOD soaks in, an met a VERY inspiring 77 year old woman, traveling solo in an E-450 RV who gave us watermelon! She re-schooled me in on-the-road herbal health (nutritive and nutritional). And a whole slough of other full-timers.
We are working our way toward the full-time lifestyle - my goal is 1-3 months (January - March) AWAY from Spokane, WA, and somewhere hot and sunny. I thrive in the heat, and I know at a heart-level that Arizona is the right place for me. No work anyway in my town that time of year.
We met the pastor of one of the five Seventh Day Adventist churches in Yakima, WA. They cooked us Top-Notch-Oatmeal! Fresh peaches, home-canned applesauce, salted brazil nuts, cashews, almonds... DELICIOUS... seeded toast, and excellent conversation.
Other neighbors welcomed us for singing around the camp fire, french toast, beer, and marshmallows.
The kids set up the tents. I relaxed.
The Fireworks at Lolo for the 4th were off the charts.
The guy who owned the place was just GIVING them out to all the people. He would say, "You don't look like you're doing anything. Here: Light this off." The Grande Finale was 32 people setting off HUGE boxes of fireworks all at once. It was incredible. And we were 30 ft. away from the staging area! It was neither too crowded nor poorly attended... just the right amount of humans. All the kids got along. The atmosphere there was laid back.
They even gave us a 4th night free, because "technically," we did pull in past midnight the first night. I didn't even ask for this.
Hot showers. Clean everything. Wonderful bar. Live music many days. HOT hotspring pool (104) and cool large outdoor one (83) with few rules and no lifeguards. Reasonable prices on food. And if you're looking to get out of your car/tent/RV/bus/van for a minute, they have a Lodge, Deluxe cabins, Regular Cabins, RV spots with and without hookups, and HUGE lawn for tents and car campers (that would be our section).
Lolo is a place where kids can truly be kids, no one is riding your ass about anything, and adults can have a genuine good old fashioned time.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place, if you happen to be traveling through Missoula, Montana area.
