At the very beginning of my journey and need to purchase a vehicle so I'm open to suggestions. I have ruled out living in a car but all other suggestions are welcome. Also just in case, any other cancer survivors out there? How do you manage the whole medical care thing? You travel between appointments and come to home base for your checkups and meds or can you find care and meds on the road? Or am I just being unrealistic?

Welcome to the forum and the tribe. On the vehicle choice it is all what you prefer. In each type of RV there is an advantage and a disadvantage. So you have to decide what suites you. Youtube is a good source for comparing different vehicles. search for compare rv types, best type RV, etc. One example is

Welcome, SkyeWolf,

Many nomads find being out in nature so much to be very healing no matter what type of rig we're living in. And a more simple life usually means much less of the traditional American lifestyle stress.

One big consideration for how far and long you travel might be whether your insurance covers expenses when you are out of your "network" of providers. As well as how much care you need and how often the follow ups need to happen.

More power to you for making your plans carefully but with determination!!

Thanks WriterMs. I went to Yellowstone when I was younger and really enjoy wildlife photography but havent been anywhere since 1996. Don't want to leave this earth having only Doctor appointments. My insurance is provided through Medicare and am 59 yrs of age. I was a private investigator for many years until getting sick and having to retire, before that I've done a lot of janitorial type jobs. I have 2 cats that I couldnt live without so I imagine my choices are between a travel trailer, a Class C and a small Class A.

Ah, now you're giving us all more clues to give you helpful comments. There are many on the forum who travel with cat(s), so they can likely give you some tips.

Since you have Medicare, I think a visit with your main doc to put follow up care on a calendar would help you... and ask him/her if those follow-ups can be done by a competent doc while you are on the road. I guess one hang up could be finding a doc who will schedule you in if you are not an on-going patient?

Again, others here deal with continuing medical care on the road so they'll chime in soon.

Hello and welcome to the CRVL forums. Skyewolf! There is no doubt you will find this journey to be healing and empowering. You've also come to the right place to help you figure things out.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

I suggest this move to another forum category. I think many people here will want to contribute their own experience, and/or follow this thread

While I do not yet have medical issues...my Mom (who wants to travel too) does. I have been wondering also how to handle the many visits to various doctors and clinics while on the road.

Hello SkyeWolf, I am a breast cancer survivor. I'm saying &%$# you to cancer and I'm going to live my life of adventure as soon as I finish my treatments and oncologists visits.
I'm just going to make my doctor where I plan on having a "home base," the place I plan to spend most of my time in. Visit the onc once a year, then I'm off to go where I want.

Sounds like you're on the right track SkyeWolf. You might try talking with your Dr's office, to see if they can refer you to other Drs in the areas you're thinking about visiting, as well as checking with your insurance. Guess you'd also need to keep good copies of all medical records with you as you go, and keep your travel schedule moderate.
I like your choice of vehicles - you don't want to give up all comforts. If you can set it up to boondock or dry camp for days or a week at a time, then visit a regular campground to empty your waste tanks, refill fresh water & food, take long hot showers or baths, then head out again, you can keep costs way down.
Cats will be fine, probably the easiest critters to road trip with. Get a couple of harnesses so they don't get away when you're in the wilds.
It's been 8 years since my last cancer surgery, and at this point it's looking good. My blood tests are now down to 1x/year. But I'm not full-timing, so I can't really advise there. My opinions are based on what I've read here mostly, as I've come to regard this forum as rather unique among RV related sites.
Is it feasible for you to pick one area/region first, to get your feet wet and break in the new lifestyle?

I'd ask your doc how often you'll have to see him when everything is over. I dont think they'll go for seeing you only once a year till you're out a few years from treatment.

I want to go to Yellowstone in late spring early summer to photograph the babies (wildlife babies that is). I am HUGELY into wildlife photography. In a perfect world I'd head for either Arizona or New Mexico tomorrow but its not a perfect world. RATS! Wisconsin is really cold and we just got our first major snowfall and I'm sick of it already!

Mods, please feel free to move this topic anywhere you wish. I'm new here and didn't know for sure where to post it. Thanks.

Congrats Dave. I too was initially diagnosed 8 yrs ago. Here's to 8 more for both of us.  :)

Live life SkyeWolf! You too, Waldenbound! And others that have beat the cancer. I have an older sister that is a breast cancer survivor. She loves watching the birds and deer and other wildlife. I take short photo taking trips and I take her when possible. Another sister also had breast cancer but she did not survive and it took her going on five years ago. Cancer is horrible.
