Can you see out your back window?

I have wrestled with the vertical storage vs clear window question, too. But I have decided I like being able to see out my windows more than having a bit more storage.

My van was a transit van, so I have one of those huge rear-view mirrors installed just below the tall ceiling. The angle is such that I can only see a few feet behind the van using it. BUT, that does still help for situations like shoppers walking behind when I'm ready to back out of a parking space.

While driving, it is not of much use, but I do enjoy having the passenger-side windows clear so I can double-check what I'm seeing in my side mirrors. I lost the convex stick-on mirror that had been on my passenger outside mirror, and this reminds me I need to replace that before spring travels. I'm also going to look into the mirror for the rear that has been recommended here.

Another consideration not yet mentioned is having the back windows clear for views when camping. My bed goes across the back, and I love being able to sit or lay on my "perch" to read and be able to glance out now and then to the scenery. Unless I'm driving in a hurry from point A to point B, I camp in the countryside so I enjoy that back view often. It is also a bit of a safety thing being able to check my whole perimeter. (I have rigid insulating panels that pop into each window for night plus a curtain that goes across the back. I can pull the curtain completely to one side and secure it back for driving.)

I can't see out my back window. I feel everybody should be able to drive with just their side mirrors. of course you need the proper side mirrors that eliminate blind spots. now there is nothing wrong with having a mirror to see out your back window and using it. however I find them unnecessary. my 2 cents. highdesertranger

Hi, just wondering if anyone has set up the back of their rig "chuck wagon" style like on teardrop trailers? Not good for stealth I'm sure but cool for boon docking I would think.

Just wondering......
John

I was wondering the same thing.

Some will say it's not good for bad weather but nether is camping! :p  I just think it would be nice for a stand up kitchen but I would keep a small portable burner for inside. The teardrop people do it all the time. I would think the car dwellers have to cook outside too.

Now back on topic.....shhhhhh

the chuckwagon kitchen thing would work better on vans that have a lift up tailgate like the Toyotas, but I am sure you could rig some sort of awning that could be put up above your barn doors when the weather is not so good.about seeing out the back I prefer to see out the back but it does not have to be the entire widow all you need is a small opening so that may be a compromise to use some of that space for storage and partially block your windows.

That would be where the water jugs go when parked. Good idea, thanks!

To add to the question, NO I don't use my RV mirror on my E-150. side mirrors are all I need. Been driving various different vehicles for 40 years that only had side mirrors.

Only thing I miss about not having the RV mirror is it's a little easier to see if Smoky is sneaking up.

I'm planning on putting my kitchen on a side door. A van is larger than a teardrop, so you don't need to use the entire back.

I use my rear windows every time I put it in reverse. Sure, I lived in a box van for 6 years with zero windows behind the side doors, but I think it's foolish not to use a very helpful widow if it's right there. If you are in a parking spot with tall vehicles on the sides you are backing up 100% blind, no matter your side mirrors, they do you no good. Being able to see a car or person sneaking up directly behind you is essential and if it's there I use it.
