Due to trashing and overuse by campers, the Forest Service is thinking of banning or limiting boondocking on popular FR 525 in the Sedona area. One option being considered is to restrict camping to designated sites on 525, for which pre-registration could be required.

For details, see new entry on the Vibin and Drivin website.

Many of the sites that are "off the path" have no camping/motor vehicle signs. Only the sites right on the road are open. I had to drive in 5+ miles to find a opening.

It's very clean though, and while there is a lot of orv traffic, the dust is low and the noise is manageable.

And too maybe the jeeps-for-tourists business(es) may simply have been finding too much traffic one day or rigs that looked too tacky for those passengers who only want to see the more sanitized side of things. Whatever, anything that could impact their bottom line and subsequent reviews of the area.

Aside, there's also a turnoff to more of an elevated hilltop area about a half mile south on same side of road that gets far less use.  Have seen some stay there for more than a day though no idea if that's aok or not with authorities.

https://www.redrocknews.com/2022/08/05/usfs-preps-to-close-camping/''....we’re implementing these emergency camping closures to close 31,000 acres of camping and campfires, which are predominantly along the 525 corridors.”

There will be eight total approved sites in the West Sedona designated dispersed camping areas. Two will be along State Route 89B and one on 89A, the rest will be off of 525.

Initially, the USFS hoped the sites would be set up last Spring. With delays in forest approval, as well as materials for signs and other campsite needs, the project was pushed back to this fall.''
