I thought it was more-or-less basic, common knowledge until I burned out a fuse on the coach trying to install LED bulbs to existing sockets. I poked around and discovered I didn't have any replacements, better get some.

Soooo, I went into the NAPA automotive parts store in Kerrville with a burned one in the palm of my hand and told the storeclerk who was gazing at the computer screen I wanted an assortment of Buss fuses.

He looked at the fuse, gave me an empty look, then squinted back at his screen preparing to key in vital information.

"What's the make, model and engine-size of your bus?"

I turned away from him, walked back to the rack where fuses were kept, found an assortment and paid for it, afraid to say anything else:

http://www.ehow.com/facts_6819281_buss-fuses-used-for_.html

Buss fuses are electrical fuses patented by the Bussmann company. BUSS is a brand name, as is Littlefuse. I wouldn't go to a store and ask for that, I'd ask for the type and amperage. ATO, ATC, and 3AG are some of the many fuse types.

Likely you're right a person shouldn't. However in the world where I came through a coke was a sody water of any kind, a Xerox machine was any kind of copier, a cow was something on four legs in a pasture if the sex wasn't obvious, and a Buss fuse was one of the kind of fuses I handed the guy.

Likely no longer true.

The prices of new fuses give me pause today. I have this tendency, at Pick and pull junkyards, to grab a couple of the fuse sizes I need the most.

My Van uses various wire gauge fusible links behind the brake booster for all the slow blow tolerant type from the pre mid '90's fuses, and glass bussman type fuses in the dashboard fuse panel, but every circuit I have added has been an ATC or ATO blade style fuse, as the glass barrel fuses let me down time and again since my van dwelling began.

I had an early 80's Volvo with the ceramic style fuses which were the worst. Only rarely would they obviously fail. Most of the time electrical issues were solved by spinning all the ceramic fuses in the panel till connectivity was temporarily restored..

it's a sad day when even the napa people are idiots. napa employees of the past wouldn't have even tried to use the computer for a fuse. they where very knowledgeable, not just about cars but anything mechanical that happen to be in their area. highdesertranger
