budget cb

I went through the search and did not find much convo about cb radios.

I want one but in the budget range. Any suggestions or warnings?

It has been a very long time since I dabbled with cb  activites. In my younger years it was used alot..now it seems to be some kind of obscure contraption to most folks.

This mobile set up may be nice.. not sure how they perform.

Nope...not that one...

The best bang for the buck is gonna be Uniden, PC 68...or if you have limited space for mounting the radio, the little Uniden 520 is a good choice.

How well does CB work, if you do NOT want to cut a hole in your vehicle to mount an external antenna?

They have fender mounts for external antennas. Open hood, take out bolt and refasten with mount under bolt. Use existing hole in firewall to run cable through.

Wonderful internet I have today! I still have a probably 30 or 40 year old CB that is probably illegal. Is there a way to tell?

CB's may still be a thing in some areas but not so much east of the mississippi. I used mine with friends that were traveling together to events and off-roading trips. Finally gave away the last one I had a few years back. Very little highway radio traffic and about the same response when asking for it. I don't mean to say they are not being used, just not much in my experience. Smart phones for GPS and all the apps available solved the where and how of traveling.

Uniden is the brand I'd choose again, as mentioned above search for different models/pricing.

I have a vintage 80's Cobra 40 channel unit that works good, but only on the rare occasions there is anyone else around with one on. I keep it because they are entertaining on long hiway trips to help kill the boredom.

They are really a thing of the past that likely won't see a resurgence anywhere near the scale when they were the rage in the 70's-80's. As mentioned above, smart phones and GPS have killed them off, however many truckers still use them for entertainment and for that all important "Smokey Alert"!

There are a few youtube vids on them that review the popular brands and show various models that might give you the best bang for your buck if you're still looking at buying one.

I liked it and have thought about getting another one for the van.
I think truckers still use them quite a bit, and always nice to have another form of communication.
When I had my Jeep I was in a jeep club and when we went trail riding we'd chat on our CBs.
