I am a 54yo married man with 3 grown children and a grandchild who are all still living with me. I have done a fair amount of camping in my youth and as an adult taking my children. In the summer of 2001 I took the whole family on a month-long camping trip across the country and back. We tent camped out of a Ford Windstar. This was inspired by a similar trip I went on as a 9yo with my family. My wife and I have often spoken about retiring to the nomadic life. Recent health issues have made me rethink how long I can expect to live after retirement. So I am considering early retirement and hitting the road in Sept 2018. I will have 25 years in my government job so I can retire with Medical Coverage for my wife and I for a cost of less than $2000 per year. With a monthly income of $1900 and a nest egg, I think we can live frugally by dry camping. I am spending a lot of time on the website and doing other research. I am getting more and more excited. I still haven't settled on a camper style but am currently leaning toward a Class B or making my own out of a Ford Transit extended high-top. But my wife has not yet been involved in the research so everything is tentative until she is involved. Probably after the holidays. There is a lot to do in the next 21 months. I have to assist my children in becoming independent, sell off my house and possessions, find and outfit a vehicle, etc. This site has been and will continue to be a great help and inspiration. Any advice is appreciated. Happy Trails to You!
