I am really interested in the BLM and LTVA's to stay in but I am in Minnesota and it's not very feasible for me to drive to the south on a regular basis so I'm wondering if there are any of these areas in the midwest? I know there are national parks too but in my area they are way up north by Canada in the wilderness area and I was looking for something closer to civilization, like southern MN, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, etc.

the LTVA's are in CA and AZ. there is not a lot of BLM land outside the 11 western states. if you don't want to come out west I think your best bet would be to find someone with private property to let you stay on for cheap or free. doesn't it get real cold in all those states in the winter? highdesertranger

Check out freecampsites.net. There are other possibilities in that region without using BLM or National Forests.

Here's a cool hugemungous .pdf map of all the National Forests:

Dares a couple Forests up dare in da north dare. Da Chippawa, and a 'course da Superior.

Here's a Google Map link to what looks like a bunch of boondocking sites.

Looks like a whole bunch around there. Maybe a local will chime in.

Disclaimer: Never been there, no local knowledge, just like to play around looking for places on Google Maps satellite view.

Oh yeah the windchills here get to -50 sometimes. I have to stay within visiting distance of my mom, she's in her 70's. Trust me, if it weren't for her I would for sure be down south all the time.

Yeah I checked that site already but haven't found anything actually free, not close to where I live anyway.

The Shawnee National Forest is in southern Illinois. Still a good way from MN. I'm guessing a 10 to 12 hour drive from the Twin Cities. There are a number of campgrounds for a fee as well as dispersed camping areas. The 14 day limit applies, but one might be able to stretch it out by changing locations every two weeks. I've not been there yet, just checked it out on the web. But it looks like the dispersed camping is free.
