Jay, for some reason, I just can't relate to vidoes, I rarely watch them. But I know everybody else loves them so I decided to give it a try. I bought a Sony cam and bought some How-To books. I just can't make myself get into them so the cam sits unused. You are welcome to it as a gift. It isn't HD, which I didn't think mattered but turns out it does.

I'm in Alaska and it's in Arizona so I can't get it to you now. But when I get back there this fall I'll get it to you somehow if you are still looking for one.

But I am a big believer in learning the rules and basics of art through books. I love nature photography and have read hundreds of books on it. That and taking 10,000 bad pictures has turned me into a pretty decent photographer. If there is decent weather, decent light and a decent subject, I can take a pretty good picture.

So I bought some books on youtube and this is the only one I loved and thought really helped, so I recomend it to you. If you have a Kindle, I can loan it to you, but I don't know how. You will have to take the time to learn and give me detailed instructions and I will loan it to you. It's not that expensive and you might consider it a business expense and just buy it. It's here:

Proper lighting (whether artificial or natural) contributes greatly to good photography for both stills and videos. In the past, when I used to get paid $200 per hour for photoshoot assignments, I would have to drag out my 2,000 watt packs of studio lighting gear with multiple flash heads, including light stands, light boxes, umbrellas, reflectors, barn doors, and portable backgrounds. Plus another 1,000 watts of monoblock flash heads set for slaved remote triggering. Seriously, I would drag out 100 pounds of lighting gear to do a photoshoot. That's not including my camera gear yet!

Here's are some of my simple and easy to do methods for *better* lighting. If lighting a person (for a portrait), you almost always want to position a light source about 1 foot above the person's head. Make sure the light is not too high as to not have the "catch lights" included in the person's eye pupils. In other words, you want to include the catch lights in a person's eyes. Given a choice, you usually want to do "short lighting" versus "broad lighting". Short lighting is more flattering and makes a person look slimmer. Conversly, broad lighting makes a person's face (and body) look bigger with more weight. Ambient (natural) lighting can also be very flattering, but don't light a person under full noon time sun, which causes harsh shadows (hence the raccoon eye effect). If you can't avoid the harsh sunlight, then try backlighting the subject, plus add some artificial fill. Best time for natural sun lighting is the first hour of sunshine and last hour of sunshine. Or put the person in full shade to avoid the harsh sun. I could go on and on, but these are some simple pointers.

Here are some informative links on lighting techniques. Although the links are mainly for "still" photography, much of it also applies to video photography as well.

I watch a few Youtube videos on a occasion, and really some of them were my inspiration for considering full timing.

Nomadic Fanatic http://www.youtube.com/user/nomadicfanatic (Guy living in a Class C), Long Long Honeymoon http://www.youtube.com/user/walkaboutgroup (Couple traveling in an Airstream), Chris Travels http://www.youtube.com/user/tylerdurdeno9 ("Chris Penn" full timing and traveling in a Class B), Living The Van Life http://www.youtube.com/user/LivingTheVanLife("Chad" Full timing in a Vanagon) and Gone with the Wynns http://www.youtube.com/user/gonewiththewynns (Couple traveling/fulltiming in a decked out Class A). Another interesting one is Jordansname http://www.youtube.com/user/jordansname. He's a paraplegic vandweller that travels with his dog and has taken some canoe/sailing trips. There's a couple others that I used to watch (KylePounds and Faliaphotography), but they are no longer fulltiming or making Rv/van videos.

As for the youtube ads..when you have so many views they ask you if they can profit share some ads with you. Youtube picks the style of ad and content..so whether it is the skip kind is not in thier control

Bob...Thanks for the offer, very nice of you.
As you know getting the van ready to withstand winter in comfort is our financial priority, so a cam in lower on the list. (The van is coming along slow but steady).

The Amazon price for the video book is reasonable. Shoot, I have no clue about how to loan a book electronically. I've got the Kindle app on my laptop, but never used it either....guess this is good reason to give it a go.

Looking forward to hearing about the Alaskan adventure at Q this Jan.

I thought you had to sign up for adsense?

Either way, unless you get thousands of views per day, it won't mean scratch.

Jay, I re-read my post and i see it could have been misunderstood. I want to give you the cam as a gift. By that I mean free, no charge, nada, zip, zilch.

I don't have it in my possession or I would mail it to you now. I won't have it until fall.

Adsense is a separate deal, you already signed up for youtube if you have a video that qualifies as a 'youtube partner'
