bed frame

I see many people's build-outs and have noted that often beds are framed with wood.  Is there a reason why I shouldn't just use the steel bed rails from my bed in the van?  they are strong and not too heavy and allow for more space under the bed.

Metal frame rails will work fine, but they're just tougher to work with compared to wood.&nbsp; Wood can be cut to whatever length required and sometimes in vans things vary from standard sizes.&nbsp; With the frame rails most modifications in length would require welding of the brackets.

Was going to say the same as Z.

Easier for most people to cut wood to lengths they need, so to make bed exactly as wide/tall as they need.

If you have a metal frame that works for you, no reason really not to use it.

I imagine a metal frame would cause more road noise than wood.&nbsp; Just be sure it fits what you need.&nbsp;

thanks for the feedback. &nbsp;I never considered noise and issue or the size of the bed. &nbsp;I plan to build the bed lengthwise along the driver side of the van because I like to stretch when i lie down... width is not so important... just wider than a sleeping bag is fine. &nbsp;With the passenger seat removed there will be plenty of room. &nbsp; I do see why it is seldom done though. &nbsp;Also, the &nbsp;ends of the bed will be wood with the rails bolted through the wood frame. &nbsp;the headboard will act a a backsplash for a small cooking area.

I saw a slick execution somewhere for a bed across the back. The guy bolted 2x4s to the ribs on each side of the van. The boards were notched about every 6" so that 1x1 square pipes dropped in. Simple engineering, not too hard to make.
