I'll be taking I-5 from Seattle to Los Angeles in a few days and I especially enjoy the southern Oregon and Shasta stretches of that trip.

I agree with Sacramento north, but the stretch from Sacramento to Los Angeles is the worst I hate it. I try to avoid it. I much prefer the US 395 route. even if it's longer and slower. highdesertranger

highdesertranger, I 100% agree, I never turn down a chance to drive 395. One of my favorite drives anywhere in the country.

Back-roads of Alaska, anyone try eM'?

Hmmm ... I took route 3 from Anchorage to Fairbanks, route 2 from Fairbanks to Delta Junction, route 4 from Delta Junction to Glennallen and returned to Anchorage via route 1. They were all like back roads to me ... and since it was May, there was still damage to some of them due to the winter. It was the first time I saw moose crossing signs, and one did mosey out in front of my car!  :)

while I prefer the back roads, I'm often on the freeway due to time conflicts. For instance, when I left RTR I needed to be back home 950 miles away by that night, so no time to sight see. On the other hand, I've probably driven from Colorado to the west coast at least 25+ times, so when I have time I'm always on the hunt for new and interesting routes. I can only drive I25 to I40 so many times.

Much like masterplumber, I enjoy the back roads, but more often than not I'm on a tight schedule when I travel. For that reason, I usually take the freeway.

I can't go any faster on the "I's" so why bother. ;)
I will use the back roads if I can't find a dirt track going that way.
