Good equipment, good speaking ability, sure. But content is still king. People will watch.as you stutter thru an entire video shot on your phone if you are giving them information they feel is important.

Yep.  Exactly.

Before it disappeared for unknown reasons, my favorite YouTube channel was filmed on a phone, never edited and the filming ability of the YouTuber was poor at times. But nevertheless I continued to come back to watch their video's.  Content is truly king.

You favorite channel might have disappeared because the creator got bored and tired of doing it. Three kinds of videos seem to be popular in the nomad/travel genre. There is the vlog type where the creator is the content. Caravan Caroline, RVDebs, DebraJoy, Ashia of Pandamonium,  and Mike of Living Free are that type. There is the destination type, like Adam the Woo and Burger Planet. And there is the information type, like Slim Potatohead and Cheaprvliving. Some creators do more than one type, like Nomadic Fanatic and Little House on the Road.

Few people are as creative as they think they are. Coming up with fresh ideas, day after day and week after week, is hard. Sooner or later, they all start repeating themselves and each other. The more you post, the faster that day comes.  Everyone is going to Disney or down Rd 66. Everyone is emptying their tanks or doing a cooking show. Everyone is doing a tour of their, or someone else's, vehicle or complaining about their breaks or their transmission. Everyone has a "story" and is on a "journey." They make it sound like they are bloody Bilbo Baggins. Could some of them be any more pretentious?

Unless you have reached the point where you have a cult of personality going for you, where YOU are actually the content, people will get bored and stop watching you. You may still have the subs, but they won't click and watch. That personality thing is hard to predict. I don't mean to be snarky, but who would have thought Letty or Elvis or even Bob would get a devoted following? Most people just aren't that interesting. For the ones that make it work, it is golden.

I think you're right.  The channels I continuously go back to is partly because of the personality of the YouTubers.

How-to video's can bring in the viewers but once the viewers have the information they're looking for, they don't need you anymore.  However, personality and entertainment can keep them coming back, I think.

monetizing is ok with me.....as long as it is "PURE" truth. I have to be careful about what I believe and before I make drastic decisions with my life.

The only place I know of to find "pure" truth is mathematics. Well, maybe physics, too. Physics is mostly mathematics, anyway. Get yourself back to university. If you are not at university, you are probably in the wrong place.

^^ As they say, "proof" is for mathematics and alcohol.

This has been a very informative thread!

There is a channel I've been watching called Scotty Kilmer. Some of you guys may not like him, but I think he's hilarious (Persona)and I often learn something (Content). And no, he's not perfect but who is?

I think a good gauge of whether someone is successful on YouTube is the amount of trolls/detractors one has. Scotty certainly has his because HELLO he's successful at it. There are many others. With 2.5M subscribers, funny and good content Scotty's on a roll.

I always try to watch the videos to the end, "like," sometimes comment, even though I have YouTube Red which cuts out the ads.

Scotty is interesting but I only watch 2 or 3 of his videos per month.
Drachinifel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4mftUX7apmV1vsVXZh7RTw) is all about content; if you love ships and navies, you might like his channel.  The History Guy has a nice personality but mostly offers historical content.  There are a lot of youtube channels with high quality content.  Best of luck to anyone who creates a channel.
