I used one of the Amazon lockers for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It really was a pleasant, streamlined process.
The first step was while ordering and selecting a shipping address, in that space, I chose Amazon Locker and a specific locker based on the address of the locker. When they showed me my list of choices, I just looked up the addresses in Google to see which was the most convenient.
After ordering, Amazon sent the normal notifications of shipping, but also a special notification with a QR code embedded in the email. When picking up the package, you can either use your secret password, which they also provide for that one shipment, or you can use the QR code.
I later received an email telling me that the package had been delivered to the locker and was ready for pickup anytime in the next 4 days.
When I went to pick up the package at an Albertsons grocery store, I discovered that the locker unit was outside on the sidewalk at the front of the store, similar to the video service Redbox.
I walked up to the computer screen embedded in the front of the locker unit, pressed the touch screen, and let the locker's scanner scan the QR code on the email on my smartphone. As soon as I did that, one of the locker doors popped open. Inside was my package. I just closed the locker door and went on my way. The whole thing took less than one minute for a newbie.
I plan to use that service as much as I can in the future and highly recommend it to anyone with a need who hasn't tried it. The only unfortunate part is that the lockers seem to be located mostly in major metropolitan areas. I second the opinion that it would be great to see those lockers at truck stops.
