Before I stumbled on cheaprvliving, I had notice a few vans that seemed "different".  Some were dirtier than others and one vehicle was in the grocery store parking lot when I went to get groceries one night and the next morning it was still there.  It was way out, past where even the employees usually park (I use to frequent the store quit a bit and still drive past it quite reguarly).  Some were a bit more obvious, like window ac units and generators.  I just had not put two and two together until I saw the website.  The only advantage I still like about living in a house, is the ability to walk around in my underwear without being unduly noticed.  Other than that, not really a big deal.  I have spent a good portion of my adult life camping and/or assisting local emergency responders.

Once you know what to look for, you start seeing it around you. In the past, before I knew anything about van dwelling, when I'd go to a Walmart or Meijers and see a truck or van parked way out in the lot, I'd think it must be an employee not wanting to take up prime real estate around the store entrance. but now I can put two and two together. Also I sometimes take a quick peek inside tinted minivans I happen to be walking by. it's become kind of a game.

I think in NYC a small camper can or conversion van is the way to go. white van is asking for thieves and police seeing if the vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle. Also the conversion van will allow parking relatively unnoticed in arias like upper west side because it is an upper middle class neighborhood and its not uncommon for them to own conversion vans for long trips.

The vast majority of people do not recognize a van in "stealth mode." As I mentioned in a prior posting in this thread the only reason I recognized several vans as "van dwellers" was that I was researching this subject. It took my personal research into this lifestyle to realize the two vans I saw somewhat regularly were van dwellers. When I recognized certain things about these two vans it became very clear.
