I need to replace atleast 4 of 6 tires on my Kurbmaster before next spring. The size is LT 235 85 16. I have looked at prices online and local and they are not cheap. Any ideas, and could I run used or retreads on the rear duals?

Thanks for any ideas.

Talk with the national chains about a deal. Many will offer one tire for free if you get a set of 4 of a certain brand, usually ones that will be discontinued soon and they need to clear out the warehouses. Still good tires.

I would avoid retreads, nothing but trouble. Used can be a good deal, as fleet operators often change tires out by time, and tread can still be good. But again, look at the date code - old tires can fail even with good tread left.

These are about $100 each, with shipping about $150.http://www.discountedwheelwarehouse.com/235_85_16_or_235_85R16_Discount_Tires.cfm?pn=JY%2DJY781612&pID=50122

Walmart's brand of tires is made by goodyear. They may not be the best quality, but they have a good warrantee and walmart is everywhere. I've bought my tires there for years and have no complaints

Walmart is having a sale on Goodyear Tires until the first of December...I think Goodyear is a good tire and the prices are right...I just replaced all four!

This is one of those "Yes, but . . ." things.

Many years ago, I worked at a garage that sold Firestone tires. This is what we were told:

Private brand tires are not simply Goodyear tires with Walmart's name on them. Walmart, Sears, all those places, come up with their own specifications, and Goodyear, Firestone, etc. makes them to THEIR specs, not to the Goodyear or Firestone specs.

I'm sure they must meet at least MINIMAL safety standards, or Goodyear wouldn't build them for them. But they're probably not as good as a real Goodyear tire.

For the price, they may still be a good buy, as long as you understand that.

Regards
John

Goodyear doesn't make Walmart tires...there is no such brand. Walmart doesn't have a brand of tire, they just sell name brand tires cheap and the Goodyear tires are on sale until December!!

The tires at walmart are labeled Goodyear.
Because of state contract the municipal government where i worked bought Goodyear tires. Trucks, buses, and police cars. During my 25 years, there was no problem with Goodyear tires.

The tires on the Starship Grumman Olson cost $100.00 each out the door with mounting and balancing, including all taxes. Made in China, but 10 ply rated truck tires by Antares, model is Sierra S6.

unfortunately quality and affordable don't belong in the same sentence with tires. that's not saying you can't get the best deal you can get by shopping around. don't buy cheap off brand tires if you are going to drive on high speed highways. as far as tires for a dually these should all be the same model tire and the same sizes, they should all have the same amount of wear on them. that means you can't mix up used tires even if they are the same model. this also goes for vehicles with posi/traction differentials dually or not. you could however take a complete set off another dually and use them. another point all dually tires should be load range "e" minimum. highdesertranger

I appreciate all the feedback and info. Kind of what I thought I would get from the post. I guess I need to open up the wallet and put some good shoes on the old girl. Thanks for all the replies!

I haven't done it in decades, but when we used to know we needed tires soon we would start checking the bone yards (junkyards) for recent wrecks. Many had very good tires, unaffected by the accident. Some bone yards would even mount, balance and guarantee the tires.

nothing wrong with that light trip. just as long as you know what to look for. this would be a good way to get a matched set for the rear of a dually. highdesertranger

I heard that the NHTSA (Highway Safety bunch) has issued a recall on a bunch of Chinese made tires. In my work, we look at a lot of products, and the Chinese can easily copy other countries manufacturing techniques, but not their material science. There are specific alloys used by US tire makers in their steel belts that are very closely guarded secrets. The Chinese do not have the ability (nor the desire) to reverse engineer those recipes.

Ya pays your money and you takes your chances.

I am buying tires for mine soon, LT215/85R16, and Discount Tire has a Cooper for $98 each. I need 6. My old Geolanders are pretty flexible, and the rig wallows in turns. The tires have only about 8500 miles, but are 7 years old. I've seen several Class C and A motorhomes which shredded a rear tire at highway speeds and cost over $10k to fix. I will buy new tires.

Bama

you are correct bama. I heard they were leaving out one small ingredient in their rubber compound the end result is it causes catastrophic failure. nothing new this is typical practice. highdesertranger

This topic brings up a lesson for anyone making a vehicle choice. The replacement cost of tires! In my case tires run about $350 each for virgin rubber, and I have six of em! The good part is I can change a tire by myself and they get balancing beads or liquid. I did not think of that cost when I bought my truck, hard lesson learned...
