My daughter and I were sitting enjoying an after dinner talk when a Grizzly walked past my window, or so I thought. It stopped, along with the person with it and looked thru the window at us. It was a dog. Now my window is 39 inches from the floor inside,, a bit more outside and this animal was flat-footed looking in. It kind of glanced at my 7 pound cat and paid no more attention to it.

They were walking off when I opened the door and asked what kind of dog that was. I had an idea but had never seen one in the states. A Georgia Mountain dog, breed from Russia mostly. 240 pounds and a bit over 6.5 ft tall when on its hind legs. And not friendly at all. The animal is "socialized" well mannered but nasty if approached. We took his word. He is trying to re-home the pup as he has to relocate. Beautiful animal and if I had the room I would take him in a heartbeat. He had a friend here who has someone interested. The picture I will post is not him, both my daughter and I didn't think about it.

I hope everyone had a good and Joyous Christmas.  Rob

I had seen them years ago at The Black Dolphin as attack dogs but it was at a safe distance. Impressive animal.

Yeah, they have them on YT. Good grief, they are quite huge...Better have a fat bank account and a equally unafraid vet....

Find out who the zoo uses for treating the lions and tigers . . .

Although it's the wrong breed, something in this old dog adage seems to apply here:

"No sheep; no collie."

Tom

Looks like a Caucasian Ovcharka aka Russian Sheherd; a livestock guardian dog

Jim, she could be, but it was a male sooo. Cyndi, I've seen that too since I looked him up, he called it a Georgia Mountain Dog, may be one in the same. Tom, It looks like it would be a fierce protector. My vet would see him I suppose, she asks that aggressive dogs be muzzled, I'm not sure how that would work on him.

He said if he can't place him there are rescue places for that breed. After reading how they are a one person dog I wonder how long before you became that person if you adopted him??

Rob,

No doubt about the fierce protector. I was thinking more along the lines of purpose-bred dogs.  In my example, I used a collie. I had a Border Collie, so I know a little about this.   There was no possible way to keep that dog busy enough and interested enough in a typical apartment or home environment. A highly intelligent, purpose-bred dog -- minus a mission -- is often miserable and a disaster waiting to happen. And my dog probably weighed 40 pounds.

Not trying to be a party-pooper, but in my opinion, there is absolutely no place for a dog like that Georgian in a domestic situation, much less a suburban one.

But he is impressive, and I hope they find him an appropriate home.

Tom

Tom, I agree, I couldn't keep up with a pup like that. I think some buy those huge dogs and are surprised how much trouble they are to maintain.

I had a Boerboel, aka a South African Mastiff.   Not as big, mine was a female named Molly and she weighed 160lbs.  Very fierce dog and also a one person dog.  The breeder I got her from said very rarely are they able to be rehomed.  They attach to their original owner and that's it.  Sounds like this breed may be similar.  Loved her though, she was a great dog.

I now have to go google the breed, you've peaked my interest!

That's what I got reading about them. Too big and dangerous of an animal to take a chance with if true. Rob

Just think of how much it would eat

My Dane of years ago would eat 30 lbs. of dog food a week and his vet recommended buying old bread from the day old bread shops and giving him half a loaf with bacon fat on it to fill him out. It worked, course he was old school vet and someone will tell me I ruined him. He lived to be 12. Best dog i have had.

A 240 pound "fierce" dog!!!! What could go wrong???

I guarantee if you displayed it in the front yard on occasion, yours would be the safest house in the neighborhood against burglars. :p

My neighbor has had a small parade of dogs in the 50-60 pound range over the years. She has had ZERO control over all of them but considers herself a "dog person". I can only begin to imagine the outcome if she were to be offered a dog like this.

Guy

What's that saying?  Oh yeah ... There are no bad dogs; just bad owners.

Tom

I read about them a bit last night and one owner said that it didn't matter what type of collar he used if the dog went aggressive he could not stop it. I'm sure there is a place and need for such an animal but I don't think The "Burbs" is one of them. I suppose that if used for what they are bred for but not an animal I would want.

Just think how much it would cost to feed him.... especially a raw meat diet.
