On March 3rd I will be living out of my car. Just me and my beagle/lab mix. I was awarded full disability in December, and will begin receiving my first check in March. I have heart disease,( 3 myo's, and one quad bypass) I was a truck driver for 26 years, married for 25. Wife gave me the boot when I wanted to apply for disability in Sept. Been living with my sister and her husband the last 6 months.
I consider this a blessing. I've tried to do this before, but the fear factor held me back. The marriage went bad 10 years ago.
I am starting from scratch. A '95 Nissan Maxima, clothes, some blankets, tools for car repairs, and my beautiful dog. I'm confidant that I can pull this off. I have a plan, knowledge of the midwest, and the experience that comes with being a 55 year old man.
I've set up my disability payments by card, rented a post office box, got my medicaid going. I' GOIN' SOUTH ! . First stop Gulf Shores Alabama, then I'll decide to turn right or left.

Sorry to hear of the bad parts but you will do fine. Be careful and safe traveling to you.

Thanks for sharing. I for one am very interested to follow along with your new adventure.

Enjoy your freedom. Becarefull out there .life is too.short to.waste on fear so enjoy it.

Welcome! Dumping a spouse that makes you miserable is.........priceless!! I've been there, done that! You will survive. You will feel better within a few months. A year from now, all your past miseries will be ancient history.

Really interested in how this goes. There are many in your situation that are not as brave as you. Please post updates or create a blog of your adventures.

Pulled the trigger, It's liberating and scary at the same time. You sound like a survivor good travel's to you stay in touch.

welcome to the road, only concern I was kind of having... is your conditon serious? I mean if your out there on the road and have another attack, do you have a way of getting help fast? Will anybody be checking up on you?

You got this. Have a great time. And if you become unsure....just stop, look at a beautiful sunrise on the coast, and smell the fresh scent of freedom.

Keep us posted on your journey if you can! Since I'm grounded right now, I like to read about others adventures! :D

You are not alone and I too would like to read about your journey so please keep us posted here. I miss the emerald green coast of Florida and the Keys so I am thinking about heading that way sometime again.

I'd recommend turning right. I think it 's much easier to live in a car out west than back east. There's a huge abundance of free land to camp on and a real community of like-minded people. Plus, it is very easy and cheap to move with the weather and stay at a comfortable temperature year-around.

You are always welcome in my camp!
Bob

Sometimes guys that live in a certain area get things stuck in their head and are not open minded and have lack of knowledge of other areas. You are in a car so you will automatically be much less intrusive than someone in a trailer type setup or an RV. Since you are that close to northern Florida's beauty if you decide to go there you will be able to stay there for two and a half to three more months, before you have to head west across the Rockies or north up into the Appalachians and/or New England for cooler weather. There were postings on this website where you can stay on Army Corps Of Engineers land in Florida for free. Already you will be close to the Conecuh in Alabama and just a short while ago there was free camping in a certain spot. If you do not have a phone I will call the Ranger for you and check it out and will do that in the future for any place that you might want to stay. If you do decide to head west PM me I can tell you of an area that you can camp right on the water in southern Texas. I know of many State Parks in New Mexico that you can stay in for eight to ten dollars a night, with showers. At least one is free but no showers. It would be better to keep expenses down. In Arizona a little town called Williams is the coolest area in the summer and you can stay there. You will think that you are in Europe because so many Europeans visit there to see the wonders of the west. They are friendly and interesting to talk to. I know places in detail that you can camp. Bring some kind of proof of an owned home or rented apartment from back east that you are planning to return to so to speak. In California the Sierra Nevada Mountains or the far northern California coast line and north of that are your best bet to stay cool. In Colorado head up into the mountains From Ouray to Estes Park to stay cool. It just depends on what you will like. If you are not as much of a people person there is plenty of land out west that you can live like a hermit on. As you already know entire United States, Canada, certain parts of Mexico and Nova Scotia are yours with the proper legal documents. There are at least a couple of more people on this website that would do the same for you instead of telling you good luck and leave you hanging. We are here to help take away any fears that you may have.

Thank you Freedom. I appreciate the info. I do plan on heading west, possibly follow the Gulf until I reach Padre Island, Tx. I was stationed in Corpus Christi for a few years, and know that area fairly well. But I also know how HOT it gets down there. I'm hoping to either stay close by the water, or look into going into the mountains. I'm a bit of a loner, so the west does appeal to me.
