Unfortunately the large majority of the recipes require the use of an oven into which the cast iron pot or skillet is placed for baking the recipe at a specific temperature. Maybe we should do a poll to find out how many people on the forum travel with a temperature controlled oven.

Few do, but then it's not designed to be a dweller resource.

Cast iron can be used on top of the stove for recipes that require an oven. You may not get the crispy top, unless you have the cover that can hold hot coals.
 
99% of RV's have a thermostatic controlled oven. also a Dutch oven is an oven you just need to get used to the temp control. highdesertranger

Idea for a work-around:  If you have a flat cast iron lid (like I do), put a round cake pan on top and put the coals in there, or another covered pot full of boiling water on top?

Workable?

Chances are the cake pan won't withstand the heat and will warp. Also, they won't hold the heat like cast iron.
