I was up to the Canadian national parks in British Columbia not too long ago (Banff, Yoho, Glacier, Kootenay). They let you take the dogs nearly anywhere in the parks, even the backcountry, so long as they're leashed.

Several of those so-called dog friendly parks are only dog friendly in the campground or parking lots or any paved surface. So hiking is out of the question with your dog. That makes it NOT dog friendly IMHO. So I can go to this awesome national park but only see it from a parking lot. Woopee. Unless of course I leave my dog in the car which I can't do when the temps are nice enough to actual do the hiking and visiting the park in the first place. See the fine print on the last 2 parks. Most national parks have those pesky clauses which make them dog friendly in name only.

We visited Maine and Acadia this summer.  Lots of dog friendly places in Maine!  We often seek out dog parks on our travels and our favorite dog parks are in Maine.

When visiting Acadia, be sure to check out Little Long Pond on Mt. Desert Island (the island on which Acadia is located).  It's private land that is open to off leash dogs. Very nice - woods, carriage roads, meadows, and of course the pond.  Not to be confused with Great Long Pond which is a different location on the island.   http://www.bringfido.com/attraction/2873/

We also discovered a fantastic off leash dog park in South Portland Maine.  It's called Hinckley Park and has two ponds, excellent walking paths, woods, and a small access to the pond if you'd like to let your dog swim.  http://www.bringfido.com/attraction/2659/
