    Dometic vs Off Brand

I would take a look at the Costway fridge as well. I’ve seen good reviews and they are significantly cheaper than Dometic.

How much solar do I need?

Those are good recommendations. We have 200W and I feel like it’s plenty for the average dweller like you suggest. I do still think it’s important for people to know what they are powering before buying a large system though. It doesn’t make much sense to buy 600W if you can get by with 200W...

    Dog Left In Car

We place a note on our windshield that says our dog has food, water and a vent fan for when it’s hot out. It also has our phone numbers and says to please call/text if you’re concerned. We haven’t had any calls yet but we have gotten a few compliments on the note. I think it’s really helpful...

    Why even use Solar Panels?

An alternator is not going to charge a refrigerator. You would have to have it plugged in for way too many hours. BUT you’re right that solar isn’t necessary. Swap out the fridge for a high quality cooler and you can power all of those other things with your alternator.

Bed / Mattress Height (non High top van)?

We have a 4" gel memory foam and I find it super comfortable. I think 8" would probably be overkill unless you're really sensitive. I would advise setting your bed to a hight where you can sit up straight. We did the slouch bed thing for the first 6 months and it was awful (of course I tend to...

    Finding Insurance.....

We got our insurance through Costco. We explained the whole situation to them and they were able to come up with a plan for our build. We had a fridge and solar but no plumbing or toilet. We found it was actually cheaper to keep a costco membership just for the insurance than to insure through...

Does anyone have a med-large dog in your Van?

I have a 60lb german shepard. I LOVE having her along! I boondock on BLM for the most part so she's pretty easy to take care of. She's outside nearly the entire day. We go on walks together everywhere and I think she's kept me more active. The biggest challenge with a dog is heat. You really...

    Simple Versus Elaborate Buildout

We started with a simple build (in my opinion): 200W of solar, portable butane stove, no plumbing, no toilet, shower ect. We certainly had the funds to go bigger but decided we could always add those components later on. I'm SO glad we started simple! We really don't need anything extra and I...

Why would you NOT insulate your van?

It makes sense to insulate if you're traveling in cold weather or at high altitudes. I don't think insulation is necessary if you're staying in hot climates the majority of the time. All of that insulation is just going to hold the hot air in and make the vehicle more difficult to cool down...

Mounted solar panel or portable, pro's and con's

If you have the space to store them in the vehicle and you plan on staying in one spot for a while, I would go for the portable panels. That would allow you to angle it towards the sun throughout the day and really maximize your power. You can increase efficiency by nearly 25% by keeping them...

    Why even use Solar Panels?

Solar is not really necessary for a campervan - especially if you're on a budget. That said: a fridge, fans, laptop and phone is a lot. If you can sub the fridge for a high quality cooler you won't need solar and you'll save a lot of money. You can charge the laptop and phones at a Starbucks or...
