    Tire traction mats?

4 pages of comments and not a single answer to my question. The consensus is that I'm asking the wrong question but no explanation on why. Every time I ask a question on this forum I get the same thing. Can't believe this forum is connected to Bob Wells in any way.

    Tire traction mats?

Does anyone have a recommendation on traction mats to get a van un-stuck on soft ground? I see roll-up heavy rubber and cable mats and rigid straight sections, usually plastic. Is one better than another? Thanks

    Cummins Canoe (A Stepvan Story)

I just see it a different way. This van is my full-time boondocking retirement home that if all goes well they will find me dead in at age 95. It's not some kind of classic, it already has hundreds of rivet and bolt heads exposed on the outside, what's a few more, they will get painted over and...

    Cummins Canoe (A Stepvan Story)

Just a follow up, not trying to change your mind, it sounds like you really thought it through. A good friend of mine is a mechanical Engineer and he ran the heating loads for my van with just an insulated curtain with tons of air leaks. A 5kw diesel heater can easily keep up with demand, the...

    Cummins Canoe (A Stepvan Story)

Congradulations and welcome to the step van family! You might consider leaving the bulkhead wall out, it was the first thing I removed from my Freightliner. When I removed the wall, it effectively turned my 11 footer into a 15 room with lots of natural light. I'll have an insulated curtain for...

    Vent CFM vs. Interior size

I don't know your layout but a roof fan is not the only option. My cooking exhaust doubles as my general van ventilation. On high for cooking and low for general ventilation, drawing in fresh air the full length of the van. For cooling I just have a second fan blowing directly on me, something I...

Lessons learned—1st trip in a half converted van

Traditional RV'er with a winter park and a summer park are (in my opinion) recreating their bricks and sticks life. They can't afford to have a true summer and winter bricks and sticks home, so this is the next best thing. Boondockers tend to approach it a different way, we are not trying to...

Lessons learned—1st trip in a half converted van

I was at the 2019 RTR touring as many different vehicle conversions as I could to help me decide what I wanted to live in. Your statement seemed true for most of the folks I talked to. Then we had 2-3 days of rain and I was feeling sorry for many of those folks in the vans that I toured. That's...

    compressor chest freezer/fridge

You should be able to anchor in down somehow. What's the difference between the 2 models? Is it really just 5L difference?

    compressor chest freezer/fridge

I'm pretty sure your power consumption guess is way too high. I'm looking at the same unit for my build and figure 210 watt/hours per day. Once it gets down to the set temperature, the compressor only comes maybe 15 minutes/hour and during the day while charging, it does not deplete your battery...

Where do you do work on your van if you dont have a driveway?

Home Depot or Lowes parking lot, all needed supplies right there. If it's mechanical, the Pep Boys, Autozone, whatever.

    Vehicle for Tall Folk

It's only considered commercial if you use it as such. Some states won't let you register it as an RV, but you can register it as a personal-use truck in most every state. Of course you should call the DMV and your insurance company before buying. In my state of Kentucky they wouldn't register...

    The negativity we are receiving

I read this and thought, I don't remember commenting in this thread. It sounds exactly like me, especially being the weird guy in the family. In my early 40''s I quit my job to ride a bicycle across the country, they didn't understand that one either but they really got into it as they followed...

    Vehicle for Tall Folk

Many step vans have 7 foot ceilings and they would fit in your budget.

I'm doing 24v as well and all my DC devices will be 24v except the USB charging ports.

What am I looking at here, Ford Step Van

I'm converting a step van right now that is the same size, just made by a different company. I plan to take it on forest roads all the time, should be no problem. I'm sure there will be some narrow roads where I brush against branches but who cares. This is a great platform for conversion, If...

    optimal system voltage

If you want to charge with you vehicle alternator, I would just stick to 12v. I'll have 800 watts of solar panels and a pretty big battery, for me 24v has enough advantages to go with, but I'm not trying to change with my alternator.

    commerical vehicle

I think each state will be different, check with your DMV. I bought a commercial step van to be registered in Kentucky. It was no issue, I just told them it was for personal use and done, same with my insurance company. I also checked with the DOT about maybe having to stop at weigh stations and...

    Diaper pail for poop bags?

I did a search but didn't find anything. Is anybody using diaper pails for, you know, poop bags? This one on Amazon looks like it would do a good job with 7 layer plastic bags. The unit is a bit large but using just the refill bags might be a good...
