Headroom for sitting up in bed?

Elements certainly are cool, but I'd be nervous about purchasing a 10+yr old vehicle. I'm hoping to invest in something younger with low mileage so I can get many years out of it. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Headroom for sitting up in bed?

Yeah I LOVED my old minivan (Isuzu Oasis). Spent several months living out of it and had storage space to spare. Problem was by the time I was done with it my mechanic said the undercarriage was dented like a golf ball from all the off road driving, lol.

Headroom for sitting up in bed?

My beloved "coffin" (97 Subaru Outback) is still alive and kicking, but I'm saving up for my next adventure-mobile. My goal is to find a vehicle that gets good gas mileage, handles forest service roads, allows me to sleep stretched out (I'm 5'6, 130lbs), and sit upright in bed. The Outback meets...

    Playing with my Subaru

Isn't the Forester shorter than the Outback? That'd be really cool if it can stretch 6.4ft. The small SUV's I've looked at so far don't go past the 5.5ft mark. I'm also planning on a house battery system so I am concerned about having enough storage space. Thanks for the tip though, I'll look...

    Playing with my Subaru

I took the 97 Subaru Outback that was graciously gifted to me and I am having a blast with it! I removed the rear bench, threw in some gear including my Exped Megamat (77.6in x 30.3in), and have gone on some epic adventures. I am really impressed how my “large” bed makes the tiny interior...

What to do with wet rags?

Since you only use five rags per house, I would pick up a bulk bag of microfibers from the automotive section (much cheaper than the one's sold as cleaning rags), and then take the load to a laundromat at the end of the week. Some people use old newspapers to wipe windows, which could be a...

Minivans: How much does the brand matter?

Thank you for your input. I will be doing the whole test drive, pre-inspection, KBB, Carfax song and dance before buying any vehicle. As for dimensions, my previous camper was an Isuzu Oasis (rebranded 1st Gen Odyssey), which is considered small compared to most modern minivans. That worked for...

Minivans: How much does the brand matter?

I just finished college and am hunting for a minivan to get back on the road (goal: semi-nomadic graphic designer). Most reviews I’ve read point to the Honda Odyssey (past tranny issues) and Toyota Sienna as the best options. However, for the price of a Honda/Toyota, I could get a different...

    Are most Vehicle Dwellers Single

It's a shame that our culture (most cultures?) relentlessly pressures people to be in relationships while rarely promoting being single as a healthy way of being. I can't answer the OP's question, but it does make me curious if people who live unconventional lifestyles would be more open to...

GIRLS' ROOM: Why is family so unsupportive of solo female travelers?

I used to get annoyed by people worrying whenever I traveled alone (van, bicycle, or backpacking), but now I love knowing that people care. What does drive me nuts is the constant expectations to settle down, doll up, marry a man, buy a house, pop out kids, etc. I'm 31 now and thankfully my...

    Power for speakers?

Wow! Thank you all so much for your experiences and thorough responses. I hope to be able to return the favor someday. Ok so from what’s being said, car stereos and especially subwoofers use more energy than I anticipated. As for volume levels, I’m not looking to rattle other people’s windows...

    Power for speakers?

(Wasn’t sure where to post this. Mods, feel free to move it if necessary) Good evening. I’m trying to calculate my electrical needs and have a question. I LOVE listening to music, and plan on having decent speakers + subwoofer in the van that I can play while driving and (when it won’t bother...

    Any Burners Here?

I'm not a vandweller, but I have gone to Burning Man. How about you? :) I went in 08, 09, 10, 11, and 13. It was absolutely incredible, and dare I say life altering. The event has doubled in both price and population since I first went, so I doubt I'll go back. However, I do plan on attending...

    Fulltiming in Mini Van

Hello! I'm considering going with a minivan myself (probably just part-time though). Had one that I converted to a camper before and loved it. The links provided earlier are excellent, so I'll throw in a few more. The videos don't show the bed you're going for, but watching someone move around...

Ready to hit the road again

Thank you highdesertranger. I'm not terribly familiar with the terms used for roads, but I'm mostly referring to forest service roads for dispersed camping in the National Forest and on BLM lands. I always stayed within a few miles of the pavement, so I'm not sure what else is out there in "4X4...

Ready to hit the road again

Hello everyone! I am a long time lurker who finally decided to join. For one thing, I can now see your photographs in their full glory. Yay! So to share a relevant story… All my life I’ve been drawn to nature, traveling, and art in many forms. In 2009, I decided to scratch the itch to try...
