Prius: What electric appliances can I safely run?

You can use the cigarette plug for small inverters, like 200 watt. But that will not power anything that has a heating element or compressor. You can go up to about 1500-2000 watts if you attach directly to the battery in the back of the car. However that's a lot of power to draw from just one...

    Bicycle camper building

As a long time bicycle tourist (10's of thousands of miles) I would stick to a tent. The weight and cross wind affects pretty much rule it out for me. If you're just going short distances on flat ground, that's another story.

    Ground anchor?

I'm not changing anything on the car. The winch already has a 12 volt plug. This is a Prius, I only need to get it free of some sand or low spot, I have no intention of going 4 wheeling, it's just for an emergency, seeing as I already had the winch. The car has a screw-in tow hook on the front...

    Ground anchor?

Here's the one I have, it's 2,000 lb, (my mistake) 18 amp. 12 volt that I added the cigarette plug to. In the past I used it to hoist a kayak up to the ceiling of my garage to get it out of the way, then I could lower it to the top of my truck...

    Ground anchor?

Oh and the mount is not permanent, only attach when needed.

    Ground anchor?

Thank you, I should have been more specific. I already own a 3000 lb winch that plugs into a cigarette outlet, had it for other purposes. I intend to attach it to the front tow point of the car to get out of sand or mud or whatever. It has 25' of cable with a handheld controller.

    Ground anchor?

Can someone recommend the right kind of ground anchor for different types of ground? Sand, rock, or just dirt. I'm making a winch to attach to the front of my car and there are not always trees. Thanks.

Looking into changing the direction of my life

Welcome to the group! I think you will find many folks have gone through or going through some version of the same thing. If you can, go to the RTR ( big gathering in Arizona ) in January, you will see every possible method of living and working mobile. My story is different, but I'm going to...

My Prius tent combo is coming together.

Yes, just take the connector part off and zip down the rainfly portion, would take about 2 minutes to do.

My Prius tent combo is coming together.

I am sure that your ridgeline tent is much better than this walmart special, I was unsure if this was the way I wanted to go. So I was willing to risk an $85 mistake, but not a $285 mistake. Have you used your tent in the desert? Were you able to stake it down well enough? Tell us about your...

My Prius tent combo is coming together.

That's the downside. It takes all of an hour, start to finishing moving tables and chairs in. Cut that in half with 2 people. I can do it myself, but it's not easy. I'm 6'-2" tall and that makes a huge difference because the tent is very tall. I'm sure I'll get faster with time, but probably not...

Stakes, Tents & Tarps [split from Car camping the 2019 RTR]

Right the standard stakes that come with a walmart cheap tent. They are steel and work fine in a grass field, but as I said, never even been to the desert, what kind of stakes do I need. Happy to learn and get what's needed. Thanks

Stakes, Tents & Tarps [split from Car camping the 2019 RTR]

I've never camped in the desert, do standard tent stakes work well there?

    Car camping the 2019 RTR

Who's going and should we organize a car camping subgroup there? We could learn a lot from each other.  I'll be going in my Prius with attached tent.

    Greeting RV campers.

Greeting from the Bluegrass state where the bourbon is fine, horses fast and the weather too humid to camp. Lol I'm a 56 yr old single guy working toward early retirement and exploring RV living as a long term option. I have a background of camping, bicycled across the country, backpacked...
