    Really bad yellow Jackets!

Generally move... I've had problems with "killer bees" in the SW desert. The fix there is to make damn sure I don't spill water on the ground anywhere near my rig. They don't seem attracted to my food.

    Perseids meteor shower (August 2024)

I went out this morning and saw 1 meager streak. These showers from comet entrails are usually not that impressive, since it doesn't take long to vaporize a bit of ice. 4 satellites though, one of them quite large and red which was unusual. The sky was very clear which made good viewing of...

Efficiency in a van electrical system?

Like mine, it sounds like the OP has a gaming laptop, and it's hard to find a DC laptop adapter that will handle the watts. Here is a boost converter for 12 to 19V that will handle 380W...

Efficiency in a van electrical system?

Laptops are usually ~DC 19V at the input. You absolutely do not need an inverter. I go from 12V to 19V using a DC boost converter that is far more efficient. I think it was ~$30 on Amazon, for ~400W. Same with your monitors. Some will run on 12V which is ideal and this voltage doesn't need to...

    Perseids meteor shower (August 2024)

I saw a couple yesterday morning in a 10 minute span. Bright but very short lived streaks. The more interesting site was the conjunction of Jupiter and Mars, which was closest this morning. Some cloud haziness here as well, bit it was clearer yesterday.

    Wind deflector

This is how I'd do it. Fiberglass and epoxy would be best, but if that scares the OP then canvas and Titebond will work. The most important thing is a good edge radius. The front can still be a large flat piece, but if you can get a 6" radius on the edges, it will be good. Wouldn't be hard to fab.

Time to go, thank you for the time.

Sorry about your bad experiences VonBrown. Any clues on who the perps are? I too would like to know where this is happening!

    Camping Rules and Regulations

This what I found on wikipedia about when he started van living, but it doesn't say anything about him being forced. "After he and his second wife divorced, Wells began living in a truck camper, followed by a work van, and most recently, a four-wheel-drive ambulance."

    Camping Rules and Regulations

Specifically one that would make living in a vehicle (vs a building) the only viable long term option?

Would you name a few of these challenges?

    Camping Rules and Regulations

I've rented a bedroom in someone's house, both in Mesa AZ where RE was cheap, and Redondo Beach, CA where it wasn't. I was making about $180k/yr at the time in today's money. I've worked low level jobs and shared tiny apartments as well. The only time in my life that I've ever "had my own place"...

    Camping Rules and Regulations

"Losing your housing" doesn't force anything except the need to find another place to live. I don't think Bob was forced to live in a van, but if you have a link for his "origin story" I'd appreciate it. Also... there's a difference between "most likely" and "everyone".

    Camping Rules and Regulations

I agree. If somebody is "forced into it" then they are most likely too dysfunctional in general to be a responsible van-dweller.

    Camping Rules and Regulations

He's a very prominent promoter and the demographic he speaks to is the same one where the trash heapers come from. It probably would have happened without him because he is far from the only promoter, but...

    Camping Rules and Regulations

Yes, the poorer and further off the radar a place is, the more likely you can do what you like. I think there are federal codes and regulations that would cover every inch of the country, so you would never be technically "legal" but if no one is enforcing code in the county, then you shouldn't...

    Camping Rules and Regulations

It's not tricky at all. From the early 1930s to mid 1970s, we did this very well. Since then, it's been a "game" for the rich see how much they can extract from us. But the reason why that earlier period worked so well, was not because "the people" had any power, but because the oligarchs needed...

    Camping Rules and Regulations

Threatening someone of obviously low means with a $5k fine, for such a minor thing... it's heavy handed BS. Really over the top. This is something I support. But we are talking in this thread about people who are respectful of the land, and have enough wherewithal to pay their way, camping in...

Getting around the "white cargo van = lucrative breakin" thing

Really? These are usually well patrolled, and... I just don't think you'd be fooling anyone for long...

    Camping Rules and Regulations

Make more camping spots. Plenty of room in the west. For some reason we can never afford to pay for basic infrastructure... It's just another example of chaos-making I think... which caused this problem in the first place... and instead of fixing that, they hassle people who actually...

Getting around the "white cargo van = lucrative breakin" thing

It's impossible for that to be a steady state condition... only happens if it cooled down over night and hasn't warmed up yet. Thermal mass and insulation, not a "magic paint".
