Shelves ... What thickness of wood?

Actually, this is more what I had in mind when I suggested additional framing. Bear in mind, this is a rough drawing, thrown together in 5 minutes using the draw function in Word. The extra framing adds strength, allowing the use of lighter materials, but also adds some complexity to the...

    Car camping the 2019 RTR

Hi Rowan! For a little insight on installing a solar power system on a smaller vehicle, have a look at the build thread for my Kia Soul. It's similar in size and layout to your Escape, though I believe the Escape is slightly larger. Still, it should be a decent match and give you some ideas...

Shelves ... What thickness of wood?

Choice of material also makes a difference in how thick it needs to be. For instance, 1/2 in. plywood is a lot stronger than 1/2" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). Also, adding a little bit of extra framing can add quite a bit of strength to the shelf, allowing you to use a lighter material. You...

    Swearing in Pig Latin

Lately I've taken to swearing at other drivers on the road in Pig Latin. I find that it helps relax me by turning my frustration with other drivers into a sort of game. Hopefully this makes me a safer driver.

    Shower Tent

I can't tell you how sturdy this one is since I've never used one, but Walmart has a two room shower tent in it's Ozark Trail line. It looks good and seems to have mostly good reviews. This would provide room for both showering and storage without having to do too much moving stuff around...

    Video: Don't Buy An RV

Quite the eye opener. I imagine that the specific laws vary from state to state.

    Acorns and solar panels

Here are two short videos of hail tests on solar panels. This first video is of a panel from an unnamed brand put out by a third party. They actually do manage to break it, but not by using ice. The first break is from a hard, plastic sphere. The second break is from a steel ball. The second...

    Nothing sticks to Fiberglass

I'll add a third recommendation for the 3M High Strength 90, with one caution. Don't use it on white, beaded styrofoam. It'll eat right through it. While not as strong, the 3M Super 77 is a better choice for this material.

    Intro -New Member from California

Welcome Amaechina! It's always nice to see a fellow Californian on the forum! I'm fifty miles or so south of L.A., but I'm more of a road tripper than a vehicle dweller. Still, you'll find a lot of people here with some very creative and useful thoughts and ideas on vehicle dwelling. Here's...

Rent a Van or Car for RTR?

One of my neighbors at the last RTR came in Budget rental van. He wanted to see if van life was something he might enjoy before spending the money to buy a van and convert it. Now, several months later, he's in the process of converting a Sprinter van and planning to hit the road by the...

    RTR Day 1 ?

Try to get there during daylight hours. Trying to find a decent spot to park/camp after dark can be a bit of a challenge.

    Mr.Heater Golf Cart size heater

For those who aren't familiar with the Mr. Heater golf cart heater, here's what it looks like. From a functional stand point, it operates exactly like the Little Buddy heater. The differences are primarily cosmetic. The really nice thing about it for use in a car or van is that it fits in a...

    Van slide out

Have you considered putting in some sort of bump out in the side walls of the van where you plan to put your bed? A quick google search yielded a few results. http://www.flarespace.com/products/ https://rbcomponents.com/products/sprinter-van-window-flares...

    Car camping the 2019 RTR

I've been to the last two RTR's in my Kia Soul. I don't look for similar vehicle types to camp near. I look for people who are willing to have me as a neighbor for a few days. At the last RTR this took a while , as a lot of the people I encountered when I pulled in at dusk, had no interest in...

    KIA Soul

Welcome aboard Overgrown! I travel in a 2012 Kia Soul. It's a fairly good, but not quite ideal road trip vehicle for one. Two would be a little crowded. Have a look at my build thread and see if any of what I've done could be adapted to your build...

    Soon to be car dweller

Welcome to the forum! I also travel in a Kia Soul, though I'm not a full timer. Have a peek at my build thread. You might find a few ideas worth stealing, or you might have a few suggestions on things I could do better. https://vanlivingforum.com/showthread.php?tid=9848

What song do you listen to most often?

I usually only listen to the first ten seconds or so of this one, but since I have it set as the alarm on my phone for when I get up to go to work in the morning, I technically listen to it more than anything else. White Zombie's "The One", from the Escape from L.A. soundtrack. Its...
