carrying DVDs

I used to have a lot of blu-ray and DVD. I never watched my physical copies though. Whenever I bought a disk, I would rip and transcode. Getting your 300 DVD's down to 800MB would require ~ 240GB, and you can get 500GB external drives for $50. You can use Handbrake to do this easily. Insert...

    White cargo van stigma?

I had the police roll up on me after 15-20 minutes parking at a nearby park. Someone called 911 saying there was a guy sitting backwards in a van. Cop asked for ID, we chatted for a bit, he left. I verified that I wasn't doing anything illegal, but if they get a call, they have to verify. My...

Best Computing device for RV living?

I have an Asus TF700 transformer. 10" Android tablet with a keyboard dock. I bought it as an attempt at a desktop replacement. Unfortunately it failed horribly. There was nothing inherantly wrong with the concept, just lack of apps build around the concept. I was able to write and create...

    Bed in a box

I've linked this build before, but this bed setup is one of the ingenious ones I've seen. I'm planning a similar design, with 2 ~3 foot sections that can pull out into the center walkway if more sleeping room is needed. I like this setup because it allows for storage underneath, allows easy...

Polysio strips for air gap. Might this work?

This PDF backs up the air space benefit for a foil sided rigid insulation (with foil facing to the air space). It adds about R-3 to 1in thick sheet (R4.3 to R7.2).

Mystery Water Leak in the Van...

When I bought my van I had a leak that drenched the center console and radio area. At first I thought it was an antenna mount, but further research brought me to the windshield seal leaking. I got some sealant and tried to fill it up, however instead of fixing it it moved the leak from the...

    Alternative to plywood?

Just wanted to add in. The alternative that is available, MDF, is also heavy, but will basically disintegrate when subjected to moisture, which most vans will have. An alternative that will hold up well is outlined here. You use 2x1 (ish) framing and glue/bond thinner sheets of plywood to...

What's your opinion about kitchens on vans?

I plan on eventually having a full kitchen setup, but it will be done in phases. I have plenty of 5 gallon Scepter water cans. My initial setup will be a manual pump that feeds from one of them, with another acting as a grey water tank. My layout will have them next to the 40 door (of the...

    cab insulation?

Ah, ok. So for having the passenger seat part of the living area, I would hang a barrier that goes from behind the drivers seat diagonally to the passenger footwell. This would be in addition to a barrier between the passenger seat and the passenger door. The reason to for the middle barrier...

    cab insulation?

I think the general school of thought is to leave the cab uninsulated, and put a barrier between the cab and the back of the vehicle. Metal, wood, blankets, drapes, reflectix, whatever you choose to keep it separate from where you are. This is mainly due to difficulty in fully insulating the...

    Van flooring

Actually in desert southwest. I figure it's a good idea to have some insulation from the pavement storing and radiating all the heat. I figure if its too hot to walk barefoot on, the giant metal floor of the van is going to transfer that heat to the interior. I also have a diesel, so the exhaust...

    Van flooring

I have my basic floor done. It is a cargo van, so it was bare metal. First was fatmat/dynamat sound deadening. After that it was reflectix to a seam on the walls about 2 inches from the floor. It was taped along all seams to act as a vapor barrier. Next was a framework of 2x2 painted and screwed...

So.... Why Did You Choose to Live In A Van?

I'm still slowly making my way to full-timing in a van, but I had a few reasons for looking into living this kind of lifestyle. The main reason for me was cost of rent in the different places I've lived. I was working full time from home making very good money, but when I saw the job ending...

Best place to buy a van?

For that price, 'by owner' is going to be your main option. Craigslist and autotrader are good places to start. I bought mine from a van dealer, and had no worries driving it 3,000 miles back home, but I also had a higher budget.

Painting Reflectix black on one side

For me, I chose black for the stealth factor. Unless you look closely, it just looks like dark tint. I didn't want to tint my cargo windows so I wouldn't have issues at night trying to maneuver a larger vehicle. As for diminishing the effectiveness of reflectix, you kill most of its value at...

Painting Reflectix black on one side

I used a cheap black sheet and spray adhesive. Worked well for a while, but the material is starting to fade after one AZ summer. The reflectix also does not hold its shape as well anymore. I considered paint, but i assumed that reflecix would flex too much and the paint would flake off, YMMV.

    the kimberly stove (wood)

Found this setup while looking at classics, was pretty interesting. Don't know how much you could cook on top of it, but makes me think of how to get it done in my own van.

<img...

Framing a warped and dinged floor

Nice and cool 97F today, so I did some more work. Completing the rear of it first so I can build a bed. Ply screwed onto the 2x2 boards. Supports my weight just fine for the most part, will add a few more boards to make sure I never have issues. What its like underneath the rear ply...

    bed frame

Was going to say the same as Z. Easier for most people to cut wood to lengths they need, so to make bed exactly as wide/tall as they need. If you have a metal frame that works for you, no reason really not to use it.
