suppose i make up fly flyers, 'handyman available for household odd jobs: gutter cleaning, toilet and plumbing, home repairs, painting, cleaning, etc. reliable and cheap. call ... email ...' and put them on people's door handles. what would be the legalities and/or problems with that?

In a lot of municipal jurisdictions it is illegal to operate a business (which you would be doing) without obtaining a permit/license for that business from the municipality. Part of getting a business license is having references and having proper insurance.

There have been too many incidences of itinerant 'handymen' scamming the public to make this an effective way of earning money IMO.

In a lot of places it's illegal to distribute flyers with out a permit.

I would say try it. You can also post them in grocery stores and laundromats. Just mention you did not know, and get a warning to stop. You can post on Craig's list too. Create a picture collection of good results you have completed.

thanks to everyone above. that's a great idea about grocery stores and laundromats. sure i'd do craigslist too, i see a lot of people doing that already.
