Just saw a garishly painted (fluorescent Moose Meese?) van with a name indicating they are used for vacationing. They’ve been around 11 years apparently here in Los Angeles where they rent for $500 +a week. Never seen one in my life. No shower or toilet. Camp stove bed sink. Woman was really snotty and said they were doing so well they didn’t need publicity so I won’t mention the name but I’m surprised people would rent one of these things. I guess if you want to try van life but Jeez are they hideous on the outside and not stealth. Maybe a business idea if you’re not in one of the 12 states they are. So interesting though. Old fashioned vans not the sprinter types.

For $2000/mo that's cheaper than some rents. Wouldn't surprise me if some people are just living in them. Would cut down on maintenance if you were renting and the company had to do all the upkeep/repair.

There is a rental firm that supplies camper vans used by fly-in tourists. I looked up the rates for Las Vegas. Sub $50/night (when I checked last year), cheaper than motels AND you get a rental vehicle thrown in for free. Don't remember any mileage restrictions.
Includes a garish dark and light green paint job with the brand written in large script.

Another company has a psychedelic camo paint job.

"We're foreign tourists. Do your worst!"

These aren’t camper vans. And no free cars. No limit on the length of time if you’re willing to pay. They’re just plain old painted over white vans with a bed, camp stove and sink. I called again to get the facts. Rates vary by season. Los Vegas high season minimum is always three days and high season cost for those three days is $1000.for the cheapest van. Even if you rent for a year you still pay seasonal rates. From now till March is the rock bottom rates. So it’s ridiculously expensive. You can rent an apartment in Los Angeles for far less than $2000. Great  business idea though. Not sure how foreign travelers would figure out where to shower and go to the bathroom unless their English was really good. I also think with all that advertising all over the vans you’re kind of asking to be robbed. They know tourists carry a lot of cash.

Those prices give "livin the dream" new meaning. Not quite the same experience as living in your own design and build tho. Nothing like a rig that's " just right."   -crofter

Down in Australia have lots of crazy looking Wicked vans being rented to tourists at really high prices. Over the years the slogans on the side have been getting more and more offensive so local gov. authorities are starting to ban them from camp sites / caravan parks.

Here a couple of examples. I won't post the offensive ones.

The wild colors and slogans help the rental companies recover their stolen property more quickly :)
That and of course name branding for advertising.

It would be cheaper if your in the market for something to go down to the local Backpacker car markets and buy a "reasonably" condition one before they have to leave the country.
Note how I use the word "reasonably" Definitely buyer beware.

I thought it would end up being cheaper to purchase too. But I thought I’d post in case a few of you talented builders (I’ve drooled over many spectacular build outs way nicer than most places I’ve lived) wanted to get together and start a lucrative business.$$$$

Yes, for a Van Life Entrepreneur something like this may be lucrative.   But I'm sure a radio beacon may need to be hidden in the vehicle somewhere if some joker decides to take off in it or if he gets car jacked and the vandal takes off in it.   This may be part of the reason for the high visibility paint jobs.

Otherwise it sounds like a "Rent a Wreck" scheme for the week end or vacationing camper.  I could also see job hunters
who are going on the road renting them and living out of them.

Seems like it would be cheaper to rent a uhaul. Even with mileage charges. No sink, tho. Long term, surely a car note would be cheaper. Even for a sportsmobile.

I'm sure some of you have seen this, too, but it reminds me of our visit to Monument Valley.  Loads of (mainly) European tourists took economy flights to Vegas, then rented RVs to "see the American west."  It was a hoot to hear uninitiated dads from all over cussing a blue streak while dealing with RV's for the first time!  At the time, those rigs rented for $100+/day, plus mileage.

@vanfan the worst ever was an argument I gave up on on Trip Advisor. Some poor middle aged Englishwoman was going to rent a car and tour around Death Valley in August. Many of us who grew up in the Southwest and have traveled the area tried to dissuade her and tried to prepare her even to go another time of year and some obnoxious Dutch guy who claimed to be a tour guide who had been there in the summer was arguing with us telling her we were idiots and he knew better. I was truly concerned for her. This is not really off-topic as safety in traveling and living in vehicles is not joke. Much less rented ones you have no idea how well kept they are.
