I'm looking to trade in my car for an older model roadtrek or something similar.  Will an RV dealer take my 2012 Chevy Cruze as a trade in or should I sell the car on my own first and use any money I get for a down payment?

You will get more for your car by selling it yourself.  And, when looking at older RVs, bear in mind that dealers jack the prices up to allow for trade-ins and, if you don't have a trade, they will invariably bring the price down.

Unless the RV dealer is also a used car dealer, and as far as I know none are, they wont want your car on a trade-in.

I've seen cars for sale at Rv dealerships. I would have to assume that they were trade ins. Some will, some will not. You will get best value though if you sell outright yourself or as was suggested a private owner trade.
