Why I choose to follow a 5th wheeler path

So have looked at some combination of vehicle to drive (for a couple - not a single person) . And what to live in. And getting around when you arrive at some base camp. The whole driving from town to town every couple days is not appealing. Would rather find a base camp area for a month. And do whatever we want without moving for a month. Or minimal moving for a month.

That means we need a local vehicle. So we could have gone CLASS C with a small car towing. But that path seems to run to $35k and higher fully configured (on the cheap end).

Then we looked at just a cheap small van. That we build out. Or a class B. Again it gets into situation of what you can do, once you reach a destination. You can't drive it around the area much given the typical room you need park it with. Works for one person in a small configuration. But two people would be a dance to handle the inside space. Sure you can park it and use public transportation. But still inconvenient as all.

So we seem to be liking the 5th Wheel RV system with a way to secure and track the trailer, when we need to park it and go do something. Plus having a truck means you can use a camper insert, or tow a trailer. All adaptable for future trials and tests.

Looking at trucks is expensive. We choose a 2006 Toyota 2wd truck. It's got 18 inch wheels. Supposedly that gives 10 inch clearance with tires and rear differential. Have yet to measure it. Looking at CARMAX you can find these every day for $15k. Some may say that way out of the budget. But it's shared for two people, so consider that half that price for one (hey the math for a couple is about savings). This engine on v8 is supposedly super reliable also. Really hope so and has only 90k miles.

I have never seen a 5er on a Toyota. are you sure this can be done? another thing if you are going this route I would look into a gooseneck. I believe a gooseneck beats a 5er hands down. highdesertranger

I have to agree with hdr.  A Toyota strikes me as too light to handle a 5th wheel.  What's the Gross Combined Weight Rating on that truck?

I've seen a couple tundras pulling a fifth wheel that came to my campground this summer, seemed to manage well.

Are you looking st 1/2 ton 3/4 or 1 ton? I'd also recommend 4 wheel drive, never know when it's going to get sticky, especially if you're going off road for a month at a time.

I've never had a 5vr nor even towed one, so any knowledge comes from the RV forums. The first thing is there is no such thing as a 5vr that is 1/2 ton tow-able. 3/4 ton is minimal and 1 ton preferable. 5rs tow and track better than a trailer, generally have more storage and nicer floor plans available. I've seen many here with the axles flipped and there are some monsters up in the areas we use.

My trailer gives me the ability to take the truck to town. It's versatility is in that it can be towed by my SUV, a pick up or van. The SUV give lockable storage but it sucks putting a generator and gas in them. A pick up takes all of that type of storage but needs a cap to get locked up. I'd love a van if I could get it with the 4x4 my SUV has, not AWD.

Another advantage to being able to leave the rig behind is unexplored areas. I only had to back this trailer out once and I was more than happy to drop it and see if the roads were passable before risking it.

So what 5th wheel are you looking at?

I agree if you want to tow without having to worry about hills or anything so not get a 1/2 ton. It's a pain in the ass sometimes not being able to go everywhere you want to.

I think 3/4 ton is completely fine for pulling fifth wheels that aren't absolutely huge. My dad pulls a 28 footer that weighs 12k with his 3/4 ton 03 Chevy with Allison transmission.

I have seen small 5'ers. Personally I would rather have a tow behind trailer with an equalizer hitch. I would put a shell on the back of the pickup for storage and camping day trips, or pull it with a van. I have a 1/2 ton Dodge Dakota with a 4.7 V8. I also bought an old 3/4 ton Dodge van with 5.2.

I have a semi enclosed 18' cargo trailer that I have pulled with both vehicles. Both struggle, (probably because of the small v8's). I am thinking a 6 x 12 trailer may be better suited. Or a Chevy one ton with a 6.0 gas engine.

Many are saying no trouble at all with the 5.7L gas engine in the Tundra. But it's real borderline with the normal heavy stick built fifth wheeler weight. Some have put a super charger on the engine to get 40 more HP. Will be sticking with the Fiberglass versions.

Good suggestion about a cap and a trailer. Am considering that too.

Check to make sure that either or both of those fiberglass 5th wheels can be attached to your pick up truck of choice before buying either.

IIRC, some of the 5th wheel FG trailers are too low slung at the front to be fitted to a full size pick up truck.

I have 2 buddies with Tundra V-8's they both tried pulling mid size trailers. while their trucks did pull them, they both struggled. mpg took a dive and transmissions overheated in the mountains. my one buddy that travels extensively with me had his mpg drop to 7mpg the same as my 78 Chevy 1 ton. just a little food for thought. highdesertranger

FWIW, I've seen threads in other forums that say that moving down from 3/4 to 1/2 ton trucks results in the lighter trucks being blown around more by sidewinds when towing.

Again. Not getting a heavy full size 5th wheel. Not getting midsize trailer. Getting a light weight trailer or fifth wheel. Finding the best compromise.

I have a smaller 5th wheel, about 6000 lb loaded, which I tow with my GMC K1500. It does have a couple of extra leafs in the rear springs. Get about 10 or 11 mpg with it.

In your travels have you seen other classic built fifth wheelers that are this weight or less? This seems like a nice sweet spot for weight in a trailer. Plus the duel axle is awesome.
