Where in August?!

^^^ I've been to the southwest and had a great time there. But the entire country is my backyard. I've been from border to border and from coast to coast.

In general, I try to spend every winter in either Texas or Florida.

:)

Alas, soon we will have the opposite problem....

I've already slowly begun working my way down south for the winter.  (Though I'm spending a few weeks at the Virginia shore first.)
Seasonal change starting now, coming up to 1st of September .... as usual.

July and August in northern CA/NV have been very hot and smoky, but just this past week it's cooled down. 59F here this morning instead of 79F. Another month will need warm clothing. Too bad, the east won't be cooling down until November. Cool down happens faster at elevation.

Hah, for me that is a feature, not a bug. I lived in Florida for 20 years--I shiver if it gets below 75.  ;)

I like nice warm tropical winters......

When I lived in Nashville and Charlotte, I remember starting to sweat in March, and didn't stop sweating until November.

Just listening to Jim Morrison - "the west is the best" (just kidding, no wonder JM was banned almost everywheres, those lyrics).

I was in Nashville a couple years ago, in October. When I got there, I thought, "Wow, it's a bit chilly here..." Then it started raining. And kept raining. And didn't stop raining. After three weeks of being wet and cold, I couldn't stand it any more, and just got in the van and drove south till it stopped raining. That turned out to be Titusville FL.

:)

Seasons vary between years. I was down in (central) AZ And NM last Feb/March expecting warm weather, and it was down in the low 20s every night I was there. My twinkies were even frozed. I'm planning to try it in Nov/Dec this year.

Another story - can't resist. I visited Père Lachaise Cemetery back in the late 90s, and they had a guard posted at Jim Morrison's gravesite. There were teenage girls standing around crying 25-years after he died.

I was in Albuquerque during October/November, and it was pretty damn cold at night. I thought deserts were supposed to be HOT, dammit. ;)

I visited Elvis's birthplace in Corinth MS. Most of the people there looked like they were on a religious pilgrimage. Yes, there were women crying there too ....

Well, August is about over. I spent most of it on the Oregon and Washington coast. I acclimated to the dampness. The past week I've been in north-central Montana because I finally couldn't take anymore dampness. The forecast is for increasingly cooler nights, so I'll be heading southward before I wake up to frozen water. The problem is finding areas that aren't still too hot. It's a dance between latitude, elevation and weather fronts.

Albuquerque is at 5,000 feet. So like most places at elevation in the west, it cools down faster than lower elevations.

For reference, on the trip I mentioned, I was all the way down to the Mexican border near Tombstone and Douglas and it was still in the 20s there at night. OTOH, it was much warmer over near Yuma and the Salton Sea in SoCal. There were a bazillion snowbird RVs around there. That's the place to be when it's cold in the rest of AZ+NM. So, this coming trip I'll not travel so much, and move to where the warm nights are.

A few years ago, I lived in Helena MT for a few months, and it was nice up to December 1st when I went south. I was chased by a snowstorm for 2 days until I got all the way down to Provo. So it varies. Of course, one month later it dropped to -15F in MT, and stayed there. I don't think I would move to MT on a permanent basis.

Re that Holtville Hot Springs LTVA, you apparently need full black water containment to stay there. At least to be legal. But there is regular BLM land all over the place around there. BTW, a couple of months back, I asked about being able to stay in the LTVAs having just a porta-potti, and the answer was big NO, except in those LTVAs where non-contained van camping was specifically allowed (Quartzsite La Posa and Imperial).

I think you the missed the "14 day" part in what I wrote.. Porta potties are ok in the 14 day free areas & it's right there.
