This is something that I have been wondering about.... If you have a pull along camper and you are camped... do you leave it if you have to run into the town lets say to pick up something or do you take it with you? I think I would be afraid to leave it but wouldn't it get annoying to hook it up and drag it with you even if you just need to go for a few mins? Please let me know what you think.... I am curious HuggZ

By myself - the way my luck runs - when I came back it would be where I left it ---- but in flames

If I couldn't have someone with it -- its with me

If camped in parks it happens all the time. Boondocking, I've seen a few and always thought, "man they're brave", but apparently it works for them.

Rae

I leave the camper "alone" all of the time

I leave early in the morning all of the time, to go hunting or fishing all day long returning in the evening.

I have left the trailer "alone" for weeks at a time with me being 350 miles away and returning without anything being disturbed. Although, in a very small town.

I guess it could be very different in a high population area, but, I try to avoid such area as much as possible..

That is the main reason I use the trailer, as a remote cabin

Putz

Mortisha, you have hit on one of the big questions without realizing it. People ask all the time " whats the best kind of camper for me? Van, travel trailer, camper( motorhome)?" and the answer is- there is no universal answer. For exampke, i have my bus, but also have a small older travel trailer. When camped in the bus, everything HAS to be packed away for a day trip, move to the next town or state, hike , or supply run in town. With the trailer, simply lock the door and drive away. Packing it all up every time you need ice or bread is a real PITA. Keep in mind, if someone wants what you have bad r
enough, they will find a way to get it, whether you are there or not. My grandmother never locked her barn, and said a" lock will only keep an honest man out, and a dishonest one doesnt care if its locked". I kinda subscribe to that now, though i do lock it if i dont know my surroundings ( travel rest stop for example) Ive had very few problems of that sort in 26 or so years of cross country travel.

Thanks everyone for your answers! I am still in limbo about what I am going to do but as of now I have less than 2 years now to figure it all out. I am studying up all I can now LOL HuggZ

Put a STUPID THIEVES sign in window printed saying "This Trailer has GPS tracking and location alarm, if it moves my cellphone alerts me and starts telling me exactly where it is. Police will be called immediately. We will find you!!"

You can also install a motion alarm in it, like a car alarm, hooked to a battery. Thieves can steal your car, do you have 24 hour guard on that?

Well I kinda figured it may be a bit easy to steal a camper.. just hook it up and drive away unless I am missing something LOL The alarm would end up scaring me to death if it went off LOL

Most tt's take very little time or effort to hook up or off, esp a small one. 2 or 3 minutes, a little more to hook up. You do not have to be strong either. Locking couplers may be had. In years of camping even in tents, we never had an incident. Sometimes we would leave for 3 or 4 days to visit Santa Fe, Taos etc. We almost always boondocked NFs and there were often other campers in the area. We never bothered to lock the doors, anything we had never had doors that locked well anyway.
There is always the chance of theft, in a high rise apartment, in a cabin in the woods, the projects or a gated community.
People loose everything they have in homes and apts to theft or fire or catastrope all the time. I have the same view Les does in his post.
@dennis By myself - the way my luck runs - when I came back it would be where I left it ---- but in flames
I ran across a ladies blog who had a fairly new tt, luckily insured because thats what happened to hers. She said they never figured out what started the fire. She replaced it and was glad her truck wasn't hooked up. The way your luck has been running, and my luck has been running the past few monts its a good thing we are 500 miles from each other. Together we might start the Zombie Apocolypse. Look forward to meeting you when our karma is in a better light.
Dragonfly

@Dragonfly.... LOL you crack me up LOL I can see us cause the zombie apocalypse LOL I don't know it maybe fun though LOL

I was thinking about the whole tt idea and I think I have came up with a plan that would ease my mind a bit. I will invest in one of those tire locking devices LOL like the police use. So no one can take off with it LOL

I know what I want to see while travelling but I think I am going to need to figure out where I want to camp and what would be the best for me. I would love to stick to the forest areas but that isn't going to be possible all the time I know. I would like to have some stealth but not all the time. So of course I am still picking through my options. I talked with Bob out in FB last night and seen his rig (a wells cargo trailer) and I really could see loads of possibilities doing that. I could have the extra space that I need but not the extra headache of a motor home and pipes and such. I am not mechanical at all. I also took time to read a huge article about solar power and batteries and think maybe I do know a little more than I did before but of course the writer was basing his advice around a large rv and I don't feel I am going to need that much power.

That is a whole other question for me to find the answer too.... How much solar/battery power am I going to need to use the few items that I am wanting to bring with me. A small refridg, lights (LED), charging up my laptop, kindle and cell phone and the occasional use of my little sewing machine. How many batteries is enough and how many is too many? What watt of solar panels do I get to keep enough energy to use those items? Then of course the wiring and such.... my head is swimming with questions and trying to find all the answers is hard.

Oh well one day I hope to figure this all out. Thanks Bunches Everyone HuggZ

Make sure if you get a tt, it will be able to support solar panels.
You have lots of time to save money and pour over craigs list.
If and when my vintage falls apart, I may go with fiberglass such as Scamp or Casita and have a higher axel. I will probably do that (flip and change the axel) with Little Sanitee so I can get to more difficult places.
The industry makes locks just for trailers.

If you can wait til you get to Quartzsite or Slab City (Solar Mike) you can save quite a bit of money on the solar stuff. There are quite a few well to do people full timing who like to keep up with the Jones' and frequently upgrade their equipment. You can purchase some choice used stuff at a greatly discounted rate from the places that do the upgrades.

I have been toying with the idea of a small enclosed trailer for my car "Minnow" a little easier to drive than "Moby" and I would leave the trailer behind to just run about town. The funny thing is is people are afraid of big cities, yet Long Island is like the place where nobody would know what to do with a trailer, or a van...LOL, unless it's shiney and new they just look past it, being invisible in such a crowded place is great!

I have looked at many tt's and the scamp and casita are both kool but I was going to build up a cargo trailer so I could personalize it as I wanted and also I like the extra storage space of a 7x12.

@SL1966 I would love to check out slab city at least once, I have heard a lot about it and seen it in a few documentaries. Looks like a very friendly place.

I kept bookmarked a solar panel kit on amazon that someone said was a good deal ... 60 watt. I was just wondering is that going to be enough power to charge a 12v or just a 6v. Then of course reading that article (battery puzzle) kinda scared me cause now I don't know what to think. He said the gel batteries are not good and that the Trojan T105's are the best. I am a boat of confusion now =( HuggZ

@Autumn.... I do think I will be going to NY. I have a few friends around the area. I do want to check out a few sites =) Hope I can just blend right in LOL HuggZ

Mortisha if you do I would be happy to show you about, there is still so much of this island I have yet to explore. I truly do love it here, everything is just a few miles away, if you vehicle is in good shape and ya don't look like a family of nine lives inside you can really blend anywhere and sleep well, very little crime here. LOVE crashing at hospitals my Dad was in the hospital for 4 days just 2 weeks ago, (he/s the reason I moved back to LI from PA) I was parked in a parking tower so to speak even at the hottest days my van stayed cool, 6 bucks(for all 4 days) for parking, cheap good food (like salads for 2.50), and clean bathrooms...... opps the only thing that stunk was the restricted wifi access...

I will definitely let you know when I get around that area and would love to sight see with you and hang for a bit =) I do hope your dad is well now. The hospital parking sounds great I never thought of that and it is cheap and that is great. yeah the wifi does stink around hospitals but they are selling antennas now on ebay for less than 20 bucks and it gets really good reception as I have read. HuggZ

thanks , he's about the same as he was before the hospital stay, he's a drinker and it's why I won't stay at his home, he had a stroke 2 years ago and the depression and grief for the loss of his mobility has cause his drinking to increase, very sad my Dad is going to be of sound mind and a disfunctional body in a nursing home if he doesn't stop

Well I can understand what you are going through. My ex was a drinker and I don't think I have had a drink in over 10 yrs now. I was a social drinker and always happy and used to even sing in clubs but being with someone that is a drinker all the time is hard and guess I just hated it. I do hope your dad gets well and finds a better path =) HuggZ
