I cant stop laughing. Sorry to hear of the hell you went through.

Quote: have the proper safe to store a weapon while going into buildings that do not allow carrying

But seriously, how many do? Especially in a vehicle.

My CPL class was taught by an ex police officer from the Detroit area. He said Naahhh, when you go in some place that you cant carry, just throw the gun under the seat and dont worry about it. If its stolen its not your fault. I was very surprised and didn't say anything but I do have a good safe bolted to the floor.

So I looked up a few stats ddc, it appears that the US crime rate is on the decrease since the 80's as you said, you are right, by almost 1%. and in the US almost 45% gun ownership which likely has increased over that period of time, I didn't check that out, certainly the number of firearms has increase for each owner. So you can say it is a deterrent, if you only looked at those numbers, limited your study to the US, and perhaps had an agenda.
However I thought I would look up Germany as you mentioned those poor tourists. While I was at it I looked up a few more countries in OECD, that have gun control like Canada, gun ownership is close to 15% in all of these and their crime rate has decreased as well since the 80's but not by 1% but between 2 and 3%. So in this case you can't really say it is a deterrent. So I don't believe you are protecting me by owning a few guns. :)

I like that idea of breaking down the gun into separate pieces. I could break mine down into 3 major parts (4 parts if counting ammo as separate) if I wanted to keep them in separate safeboxes. That way no police could ever say the gun was loaded and ready to use. :p

My low tech solution was to break down the pistol into two pieces in separate stashes and magazine in a third.

Can you just use a bicycle lock on the seat to lock the gun to the seat? No gun safe needed except for determined thieves.

Your stereo system should have a motion detector and an aggressive dog recording. Besides the signs advertising you have an expensive gun to steal.
