Visiting RTR 2019

Hi everyone!

I'm interested in visiting the RTR next year and am thinking about renting a car or SUV. However, from what I have heard, the RTR is off the paved roads or on gravel. I believe if I rent a car, I am prohibited from driving on unpaved roads. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get around this? 

I've been dreaming of becoming an RVer for waaay too long, so I'd really, really like to come and see what all of you have to share.

Arrange for someone that is going to pick you up. Really most paved roads in Quartsite are gravel and sprayed oil. Would you park on the grass at your house with a rented car? Most camping is within site of a paved road you could walk and most likely someone would pick you up if they knew you were with the tribe.

I work part time for a locally owned car rental company and we don't care where you drive it as long as you bring it back.  We do require that you have full coverage insurance on your own vehicle that will cover any car you rent.  That way if there any damage your insurance company would pay for it after you pay the deductible.  We also take debit cards or cash, unlike the big companies.  I tell you this so you might start looking for small locally owned companies who might not be as strict as the national chains.

when rental companies say "No Off Road" they mean on unmaintained roads. in the west in smaller towns many roads are not paved, also many county roads are not paved.

this is not official but Bob said the tentative dates for the RTR are January 9-20.

I was curious about this, so I went snooping around on the web, and found something.

I thought maybe they just want don't want you on rough, or un-improved roads.

Well, this snippet from an Avis contract DOES say, no use allowed on 'unpaved' roads.

But, here is the rub: What is the broadest definition for 'paved' roads? Does it HAVE to be asphalt or concrete? Is an all-weather road that is paved with gravel, paved or not? Roads paved with gravel are different, in mind, from dirt roads. Many of the roads in the BLM areas are sort of a gravel/dirt mix.

I dunno....I would call them and ask someone, like a supervisor, exactly what is the definition of an 'unpaved road'.

One of the people camped near me at this year's RTR flew out and rented a Budget cargo van stocked with camping gear that he purchased after picking up the rental van. This gave him the opportunity to at least get a taste of what it was like living in a van while learning everything he could from his RTR neighbors. Now, several months later, he has purchased a van of his own which he is just beginning to build out into his ideal home on the road.
