I went to Alaska this last Summer. My native Verizon phone and data on it worked fine with no extra charges. The 3G hotspot did not work the several times I tried it in Canada. I have found there are times it doesn't work when my native (not a reseller) Verizon phone and data work well. I believe it has to do with roaming.

I used to have a phone on Straight Talk (Walmart reselling Verizon). My DW's phone on native Verizon would work and when I tried to use mine, a recording was asking me to put in credit card info to complete the call. We were roaming on a private cell tower that Verizon had a deal with but it did not carry over to Straight Talk. I got off Straight Talk and went back to native Verizon.

It did not work in northern Ontario except when we could get service from across the river in Michigan.

Nothing works in parts of Northern Ontario unless you have TBayTel service.

CRTC allowed them to have a total monopoly on cell service in northern Ontario because of the initial start up cost of installing sufficient towers to provide service even in the 'larger' population areas.

Keep in mind that there are great expanses of Canada that still have no cell phone service whatsoever. Even on the major highways such as the TransCanada I can count on being out of range of cell service for miles at a time.

Most businesses that have 'remote employees' have to depend on satellite phone service to provide their employees with communication services.

Depending on where you're planning on travelling you may want to rent a satellite phone. If you're staying in major urban areas mostly then you may want to also use free wifi to supplement your own cells service- all Tim Hortons, Starbucks, McD, etc. etc. will have it.
