one way to stay safe is to have a vehicle that stays roadworthy. what do you do to avoid roadside emergencies? what gear do you carry for those unavoidable emergencies?

Thought I'd revive this thread by mentioning the need for help on the road in case of a break down, running out of fuel, flat tire, dead battery, etc. One of my greatest fears is to have a major mechanical problem or run out of gas miles from any help. If we can afford a new, dependable rig then we may be able to avoid these situations, but looking at a lot of the vehicles on this forum, many of us don't have that luxury. Several years ago when I bought my first RV (20 year old class C motorhome) I found out quickly that these old rigs can be a moneypit when it comes to keeping them roadworthy. You do the best you can at maintaining them and you still have problems. To relieve some of the anxiety of getting out on the road I bought the Good Sam Emergency Road Service Platinum plan for around $139 annually. So far the only times we've used the service was when my DW ran out of gas in her car a couple of times. In both cases they dispatched someone to bring her 5 gallons of gas (no charge) to get her back on the road. Anyway, they'll send someone out for a jump start, change a flat tire, bring fuel or tow you to the nearest repair facility. And they can send out a wrecker that is capable of towing in the biggest motorhome. I think they will make an attempt to get your rig going without towing if it's within the expertise of the tow truck driver. Your covered whether or not your vehicle is owned, rented, leased or borrowed and your covered in Canada and Mexico. The peace of mind in knowing that there is someone out there to help is priceless. Now the big worry is having cell phone coverage so I can call them.
