Hello. I have a stealth camper van... wondering if anyone on here knows good places to park for the night in Portland? Preferably North Portland or East Portland.

Things are changing in Portland.

A  line of No parking between the hours of 8pm-5am were just planted by the side of our street in Se Portland.

This is part of an article in the Oregonian from Oct 10, 2017:

It’s one of many places in the city, Mayor Ted Wheeler said, that enforcement increased... he listed several steps his administration has taken... towed away 299 derelict RVs parked on neighborhood streets since November under a new program, hired additional staff for the One Point of Contact homeless complaint system, added six walking beats for Portland Police officers, hired more park rangers to patrol downtown, the South Waterfront, Eastside parks and the Springwater Corridor.

“There’s nowhere trash is acceptable. There’s nowhere needles are acceptable. There’s nowhere graffiti on public right of ways are acceptable,” Wheeler said.

He says his predecessor, Charlie Hales, was lax on enforcing laws related to homelessness, which led to the problems residents say they are now seeing.

See, THIS is why we can't have nice things. Always a number of shitheads who wreck things for everyone else....

(sigh)

Is that where that show on TV, "Portlandia" is filmed?
:D

Yes, where a mushroom hunter specializing in a particular morel, found on the north slope of one specific hillside, can make a living supplying restaurants.

Pretty sweet!

Not much ethnic diversity though...

As someone that has actually been there, and not just seen it on TV...

My family that is living there tells me that the problem is with those that trash their own camping site.

Friends that have camped there tell me the same information. Keep things clean and show respect to the people that are around you.

I am temporarily in Portland with my van for work. My van is registered (Oregon resident!) and up to date on everything, old but it good condition. I drive it daily and am never in the same spot even close to 24hrs. I’m getting “abandoned vehicle” notices and am not sure what to do. Nothing I am doing is illegal, I thoroughly checked before coming here. I know of quite a few truly abandoned vehicles in the area and they never move an inch because they are in obvious non working condition. Why am I being targeted if I am following all the rules. There are lots of vehicles on the streets, plenty of open parking, even an occasional RV. I never park directly in front of someone home or a school or anything like that. What do I do?

It sounds like the Mayor, Ted Wheeler is attempting to clean up the progressive nightmare that the previous administration left. I applaud him for cracking down on repeat offenders, but obviously is looking closely at every vehicle, not just the junkers.

I was asked to come here for an open job. I am fully employed. My van is extremely well maintained and only used for travel/work travel. I only had to sleep in it one night (I did not get a notice that night) and have been in a legal AirBnB but of course I drive to work every day and the van is never parked in the same spot when I come back in the evening. I spend a lot on nice groceries and go out to eat frequently. The “abandoned vehicle” notice is a complete lie. I’m not sure what message the mayor is trying to send...the guy down the street has a trashed mobile home type house and two non operable vehicles parked on the street (rusted out and completely flat tires). They should have been towed by now and I’ve never seen one of these notices on them. I’d understand if the profiling made sense but it really doesn’t. Once again....I’m from several hours away but this is a fully legal Oregon registered vehicle.

Maybe collect and take the notices to the Police Department, which should have a parking enforcement division.

Ask them why, ask to see what ordinance is allegedly being violated.

Thanks for the feedback. The notices specifically state that my vehicle has been parked in the same spot for more than 24hrs which is a violation of local parking law and that it must be moved every 24hrs to avoid being towed. I think it’s never in the same spot more than 10-12 hours just like everyone else. Also I had multiple people confirm sleeping in the van is not illegal here at least not for a night but I’m not even doing that. My AirBnB host says moving every 24hrs is the only legal requirement here.
I had looked into getting a temp parking permit but apparently that isn’t an option. I think I am just being targeted because I’m not local enough and I have a van. I had heard Portland is unfriendly but this is ridiculous.

I have gotten an illegally parked notice before (my younger years). The notice was a peel and stick with license plate number on it. If this is just a piece of paper, it maybe someone in the neighborhood. I would take it to the police department and get it cleared up before you're towed if it is legit. Of course they may want you to register the vehicle there since you are working there. You could just tell them you're visiting and staying at the AirBnB.

My gut tells me this is not the police. I think it may be someone you know. You don't have to go to the station house, any cop can tell you if the " citations " are legit.
