Hey All,
I posted on here like 8 months ago, but got caught up with life and hadn't really had a chance to hit the road.
I recently quit my job working part-time at a News Station. I was wanting to move to NY or LA to work in the television industry as a production assistant, which pays about $150 a day. I looked at my finances and realized I needed to eliminate a few thousand dollars in debt first. My part-time work wasn't cutting it and I had to get out of there. Working in the news meant waking up at 2:30 in the morning so I could get to work by 3:30 and it wasn't fun at all. It didn't help that I wasn't bringing in enough money to pay above and beyond my credit cards so I really wanted to get out. I put my two weeks notice in, and two days later I happened upon a Production Assistant job in Pennsylvania on a reality show near where I have family. I was fortunate that I got the gig, and that it was a 4 month stint. So I outfitted my dodge ram B250 (borrowed from my dad) and with as few modifications as possible I made it livable.
My initial plan was to park at the hotel where the rest of the crew was staying and I would charge my auxiliary battery during the day for power use at night. But after my first day there I was fortunate to reconnect with a friend who lived only 5 minutes away from where I would be working and he offered me a spot on his driveway with a power outlet on the outside of his house. So I live in a van, in a driveway. Which isn't nearly as stressful as living in a van on your own full-time, but I do like to maintain as much of my independence as possible. Since my primary goal is to get out of debt first and I will be working at this job until late August, I am going to hold steady and not spend too much money on the van. Once I get credit cards situated I would like to make the van a little more off grid livable.
Currently I take showers at Planet Fitness. Every morning we have breakfast at the hotel with the crew. Lunch is provided every day that we are on set, which is usually six days a week. So I don't have to spend much on food and if I do get hungry at night I have some peanut butter and bread that I eat, or a cup of noodles. I am definitely getting by with very little currently, but it is certainly a good taste of what truly living in a van can be like and I have to say I love it.
Anyway, I've been watching a lot of van living videos on youtube again and I wanted to create my own intro video so I posted it yesterday. feel free to check out my sweet ride. I call it Maroon 5.
