First build thread I've read all the way through here.  Great stuff. I too will be putting a drop ceiling under the roll-up door of my step van. Nice to see it done by someone else.  Thanks for all the extra effort to post up. Happy trails!

Thanks for the compliment. Someday I might regret the drop-down ceiling (roll-up door maintenance), but so far, I'm very happy with it.

Just out of the remote Internet-less mountains for a day, so checking in. More build-out progress and photos to come as I have opportunity. Maybe next week.

Tom, how are the mountains treating you?

Hey Rob,

Pretty good so far. I keep dancing on the edge of dehydration headaches. That's pretty normal for me at any elevation, but I think the mountains are making it more of an issue. I need to give that more attention, but a guy can only drink so much water without feeling like a camel.

Also, I'm nearly useless so far work-wise from all the rubbernecking I'm doing at the mind-blowing scenery!  It may take me the whole season to get used to living and working in a postcard.  :)

Hey Tom, get a big box. Of EmergenC cold medicine and have a pack in a glass of water each day. It's full of electrolytes with not nearly the sugar of Gatorade. And of course lots of vitiman C to keep you healthy.

That ^^^^ ... that is what I'm living for!!

Tom

You will get use to the altitude and the scenery soon enough.

i was starting to think you got moved from simple probing and into the breeding program

have you asked about shiny metals and gemstones?

Sorry, you lost me entirely with that one. Can I get aTake 2?

Tom

I decided to pretend it didn't happen and move along. However it was good to get some clarification...

You're perceptive -- I haven't been around much recently.  Combination of being / working in places that don't even have a cell phone signal, and busy.  Changes are afoot, but I'm now around places with connectivity more than before, so I'm optimistic.  More details to follow and more updates on my build-out.

Progress Update

Using Useless Space

-------------------------------------

It's been quite a long time since I posted an update.  Crazy couple of months.  Also, it's funny how working for income can get in the way of a build-out! ;-)

As everyone knows who lives in a small space -- apartment or vehicle -- it is important to make use of every single bit of space.  For example, van people will find ways to store things in the hollow parts of their doors.  Nothing new to those on the move.

I have been doing this all throughout my build-out.  My favorite so far is the Lazy Susan closet in the shower stall.  However, trailing close in second place is my this one.  This has been in the works for months, being done in dribs and drabs, when time allowed.

This will take two posts due to photo limits.

-----

As some of you might remember, I created a drop ceiling in part of the box in order to cover / contain the roll-up door when up and isolate the shed from the living space.  That drop ceiling ends about halfway into the box.  So, part of the ceiling is higher, creating a small vertical space like this:

And this wasn't enough use of that space to satisfy me:

-----

People suggested how to use that little space, such as a shelf.  Considered and rejected that.  Too short to put anything up there but dust-collectors that would fall off anyway.

I had another "laying in bed waking up" epiphany.  That led to the following idea.  These photos show it finished - front and back:

And this is the beginning -- a black iron floor flange ... that was followed by electrical conduit (just for structural strength) and a bit of PVC pipe:

( Progress Update continued)

And the idea?  A place to store light, but very bulky cumbersome things ... that stuff that is always taking up space and getting in the way ...

Toilet paper and paper towels:

=================

By way of explanation, the toilet paper and paper towels rest on two pieces of electrical conduit.  That conduit is not continuous.  There is a gap between them large enough to insert a roll of paper towels.  That gap is covered by a sliding piece of painted PVC pipe, that makes the entire pipe support function as one piece.  So, when I want some TP or paper towels, I just undo and drop the middle green fabric section (as shown, velcro), slide the PVC to one side to expose the gap between the pipes, remove the item from the gap, and put everything back in place.  Presto!  So far, I love it.

You know, it is such a small thing, but finishing it after months of waiting feels like a million bucks.  And it's a bonus that I can find my toilet paper now when the need arises! ;-)

I can't stop laughing ...but it's better than hogging up a compartment like mine !!!
Well done!

And! You can pull the paper down off the rolls to the floor to make a lovely curtain!

Got any cats? They'd love it!
