Every once and a while you can get lucky and come across a pick up that has been sitting up for a while. Some call it a "barn" find. This discussion can include lots of other stuff besides old gas in the tank. What does a person need to check before putting it back on the road? And I might add a lot of these items we talk about would apply to any used truck or vehicle that has 15 + years on it.
I'll start by talking brakes (safety first!).
Obvious stuff like does the brake pedal go to the floor. What a lot of folks miss is the fluid and lines. Old brake fluid tends to settle and corrosion starts in the wheel cylinders causing leaking fluid. Look for wet spots of brake fluid around the wheels. Look at the flexible lines at each wheel for visible cracks or weathering of the hose. Check the steel lines along the frame for any chafing that can rub a hole in a steel line.
After all the input from everyone, a person could make a list of things to check before buying a used vehicle.
