Being the first born son, my father and I shared the same name. He passed away several years ago. My sister was executor of his estate. (She was a bank vice-president and considered far more responsible than I am. Can't argue with that assessment.)
Anyway, as part of her duties, she checked our name on the New York State Comptroller's unclaimed funds web site. She got a hit, but when she tried to claim it for Pop's estate, the Social Security # didn't match. So she passed it on to me.
I filed a claim on it, and a couple or three weeks later, I got a check for a bit over two grand. Turns out that Prudential had converted a life insurance policy I had from one kind to another, or something (it's never really been clear to me). The really weird part is that I was still getting and paying quarterly invoices from them, so I KNOW they had my address. I have no idea why they claimed they couldn't find me. But they turned it over to the state, as required by law.
Anyway, today in the mail, I got a letter from some company named Fletcher Unclaimed Asset Recovery claiming that NY State was holding unclaimed funds for me, and they offered to get me my money for 15% of whatever I got.
Well, I know that I don't need these idiots to get my money back, I went back to the NY State Comptroller's site and sure enough, they said they were holding funds from Chase Bank, something about a demand deposit account, since 2015. So I filed for these too, and should be getting them in a few weeks. Again, it's a complete mystery to me. I have a credit card with Chase, and they send me a bill every month, so they certainly know where I live. Also, I've never done any business with them except the credit card, so I have no idea what this "demand deposit account" is. (They won't tell me how much money is in it. I'll find out when they send me the check. Maybe it's only $1.98.)
Anyway, I thought I'd mention to all of you that it's probably a good idea to check these web sites once a year for your name, you never know what the hell may come up unexpectedly.
Here's a good site to start with:
https://www.unclaimed.org/
Remember to check EVERY state you've ever lived or worked in. BTW, they do the Canadian provinces, too
Good Luck!
