Being the first born son, my father and I shared the same name.  He passed away several years ago.  My sister was executor of his estate.  (She was a bank vice-president and considered far more responsible than I am.  Can't argue with that assessment.)

Anyway, as part of her duties, she checked our name on the New York State Comptroller's unclaimed funds web site.  She got a hit, but when she tried to claim it for Pop's estate, the Social Security # didn't match.  So she passed it on to me.

I filed a claim on it, and a couple or three weeks later, I got a check for a bit over two grand.  Turns out that Prudential had converted a life insurance policy I had from one kind to another, or something (it's never really been clear to me).  The really weird part is that I was still getting and paying quarterly invoices from them, so I KNOW they had my address.  I have no idea why they claimed they couldn't find me.  But they turned it over to the state, as required by law.

Anyway, today in the mail, I got a letter from some company named Fletcher Unclaimed Asset Recovery claiming that NY State was holding unclaimed funds for me, and they offered to get me my money for 15% of whatever I got.

Well, I know that I don't need these idiots to get my money back, I went back to the NY State Comptroller's site and sure enough, they said they were holding funds from Chase Bank, something about a demand deposit account, since 2015.  So I filed for these too, and should be getting them in a few weeks.  Again, it's a complete mystery to me.  I have a credit card with Chase, and they send me a bill every month, so they certainly know where I live.  Also, I've never done any business with them except the credit card, so I have no idea what this "demand deposit account" is.  (They won't tell me how much money is in it.  I'll find out when they send me the check.  Maybe it's only $1.98.)

Anyway, I thought I'd mention to all of you that it's probably a good idea to check these web sites once a year for your name, you never know what the hell may come up unexpectedly.

Here's a good site to start with:

Remember to check EVERY state you've ever lived or worked in.  BTW, they do the Canadian provinces, too

Good Luck!

Well that was quick and fun some huge company owns me $0.02, how much is that? Just my 2 cents like Hippiechk, thanks girl might leave it alone to collect interest. LOL

That is the problem with unclaimed funds. No interest. It is good to check occasionally. I found $1893 from an old pension account.

FOLLOWUP:  Just got a check in the mail for $25.30.  Still have no idea why Chase thinks they owe me this, but I'll cash it anyway.

I got about $600 from Bank of America 6 years after my Dad passed. A friend who's really just an acquaintance on facebook, said she clicked on a link and it said find out if you or your friends on FB are owed any money. She said me and a few other friends of hers were owed money. I didn't go to the link, as I know it was the same type of company the OP was contacted by and would want a percent. Went direct to the source for Massachusetts and filed a claim and few weeks later just under $600 came in the mail. Opened one of those high interest online savings accounts with it and it's been sitting there the last four years. Think i'm up to $630 or so. I always forget it's there.

Thanks OP!  Submitted a claim when you first started this thread and just got a check for $251 today.  Nice!

That's Great!  Congratulations!

Thanks so much for this! I abandoned an ing checking account years ago thinking there was a near zero balance but it shows as being over $100. I just started the claim, hopefully it will be a good one.

That was a fun way to kill an hour! Found my wife and mom. Maybe i'll get dinner out of it ;)

Sadly, I have about 9-12 shares of Tektronix stock I cannot claim.

They are in my Fathers name and even though I can get his SSN and "Claim" it, we are shown that there's 3 kids and EACH one has to sign off for redemption. (Washington State BTW)   :-/

Well, needless to say I have no issues with talking with older sibling, but the younger? She'd happily ignore my requests for anything just to stop anyone from getting $$$$

Can choose friends, but not family....

I don't believe there is any kind of "statute of limitations" on these unclaimed funds, so if you somehow manage to outlive your sister, remember to try again.

well, I had $50 coming from Uhaul, but somehow the download doesn't show up in my computer

This is very nearly a true 'zombie thread'...but here it is being awakened from the 'dead'...and it might just help someone else.

I recently found $30.46 on claimittexas.org...and I checked for a couple of other friends, one was owed just under $100 and another will be getting about $430....

Mine was an overpayment refund from Barclay in Delaware, an account I closed years ago. I just got the check from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts yesterday.

One of the others was unpaid dividends to the friends father's account who has long ago passed away...he had no idea the $430 was just sitting there in an energy stock.

These are not scams, these are actual state websites that hold un-claimed funds.

Here is the one for Texas that I used:

www.claimittexas.org

Here is the national list:

Happy hunting!

Cool. I discovered four entries worth "over $50" associated with my former home in North Carolina, and $37.31 for my former mail forwarding address in South Dakota.
