"Cloaking" technology is being worked on at many levels, especially the military.
Saw a piece on Discovery a while back showing the concept on a tank.

But we'll probably follow the Star Trek model and allow our enemies to develop the technology while the 'Federation' bans its use!

(Although we did get to see Mr. Spock use his wily seductive prowess to distract the hottie Romulan Commander, while Kirk swiped the latest improved version of their cloaking device).
