The 31L Indel B we bought for $450 is pretty dang small.  It comes without the handles attached for shipping purposes and you could leave them off if you wanted.  It only vents on one end plus about 6 inches on each side of that end.

I would find a box or something that is 18L and see what you can put in there.  Might be smaller than you are thinking.   I can give you the exact dimensions of the Indel B 31L if you want to see if it would fit (you could find a cardboard box of its size and see how it might work in your van.

It runs on 12V, 24V and 110V and has the Danfoss (or new company that bought Danfoss) brushless compressor.   Because it runs on 110V too, it means they included the 110V to 24V DC-DC converter which was a $100 option on our NovaKool upright fridge, which used the same compressor and costs $1700.

$450 is a steal with free shipping.
Thx, IGBT. The cardboard box is a great idea.  I'll try that. Just moved. I've got plenty of boxes to empty. Should be able to find one the right size. Yes, that 18L version looks mighty tiny inside.

I want to carry high quality protein in my freezer compartment, better than I can find in most small towns, so a bigger unit is desirable, with the variable power options. :) I don't see any reason for the handles. Don't plan to lug it outside.

I'll check the website. It should give the dimensions there. If not, I'll ask you for them. Just need to make sure there's room to vent properly.

Actually that brings up a great point. The above design seems like it would make adding more insulation, like a "slide in box", more difficult.

Do any of these portables have venting from one side only?

I'm imagining a low-profile sheet metal setup, like custom ducting, low-watt fan venting the heated air away from the condenser/electronics, pulling in outbound air from the living space.

In summer that is, get a thermostatic control on a variable-speed fan and reverse things, bring in cold air from outside, and blow it into the living space once it's warmer than the room temp.

Just spitballin' obviously, SternWake probably has this all figured out (sigh, we miss ya man!)

It only consumes 25 watts in the low power mode, which is probably less heat than a laptop generates.
