I think of myself as a member of a tribe. However we are too independent to travel year-around together. So we meet together pretty much every year at the RTR in Quartzsite and then often travel together for awhile afterwards only to split up as spring comes on.
I can think of one vandweller friend I have seen every January for the last 5 years in Quartzsite, and numerous of us that I have seen 3 of the last 4 years. And I consider all of them as family. I camped with one friend for over a year and then we had a break and then camped together for the last 3 months and now he has left for the rest of the year but we will meet up again next fall here in the desert.
Our bonds are very, very strong, but also very, very elastic!! They can stretch over great distances and long period of times.
Anyone who comes to the RTR is a member of the tribe if they choose to be (or comes to my camp at any time). And there are no obligations that come with it. Most of see each other every year but missing a year doesn't break the bond in any way. We/re still family and always will be.
Keeping vandwellers together is like herding cats--an exercise in futility! However this view of tribes works very well for us.
