What's a cheap but safe way to transport a 5 gal gas can on (outside) a v-nose CT, standard length tongue, or the outside back area of my pickup? Improvised milk carton work? Regulations concerning this in AZ? I don't want to smell up the inside of the CT otherwise I'd carry it inside fastened to the plywood wall. I'm assuming there isn't a fume leak proof can on the market.

I have a 5 gallon red metal jerry can that I carry inside my van with no fumes.

offgrid can you still buy those cans in Oregon? they are a no no in Kalifornia. dogear how far do your fenders stick out? is it enough to mount a can on the side of the CT. if not it could go on the v-nose or the back door. I would use a metal can if mounting on the outside. if you can get one like offgrid posted there are many styles of mounts available. however I would go with the original blitz and not a cheap knock off. another option is the nato cans there are carb compliant ones that just came out, many mounting options for these too. however again beware of knock offs. here are real ones http://www.lexingtoncontainercompany.com/Nato-Jerry-Cans.html. listen to the narration on the cans he points out how to spot the fakes. highdesertranger

I.m a big fan of NATO cans which is not what Offgrid posted, totally different . I've had the NATO cans inside for many years, with gas in them. The NATO cans are technically illegal now because you have to have the pathetic new spout. I've seen new ones that came with a legal buggered up spout, but that's okay, you will just take it off and throw it away.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of cheap Chinese crap copies floating around and you never know what you are going to get. From the reviews it gets this one must be the real thing:

$60 with shipping is about what you have to pay. If you ever get to Moab Utah a guy there sells good ones for $50, I've bought a couple from him. Look around for military surplus stores or Prepper stores. They usually have them and they are good ones.

I much prefer the 2 1/2 gallon cans, plenty for a gen and easier to carry:

This is a new one with a legal spout for $109. And the spot is a horrible piece of shite you pay another $40 for!

Thanks guys for the feedback/links. I've been looking at the NATO cans today and reading reviews from folks about the knock offs and I'll stay clear. highdesertranger, my fenders each have a running light on top, otherwise would be a good spot and I have a ramp door. I'll be going for a true NATO can and mounting it on the tongue or inside would be good given the no fumes. The Lexingtons look great.
Bob, I agree the 2 1/2 gal looks to be the better size since the gen is all I'll use it for. Heck, I might get both....one for the gen and the 5 gal for emergency reserve.

I have a couple older Wedco brand NATO style cans that are excellent. They are still available, but have the CARB compliant spout on the gasoline versions now. I also have a Scepter can for diesel. These are what the military now uses, and you used to be able to buy them here in the USA. Unfortunately the military wanted all they could send to the USA so you can't buy them new here. If you find some used ones they are even better than the Wedco, even though they are plastic. You can buy Scepter water cans here, and I understand you can buy the fuel cans in Canada still, but some have had trouble bringing new ones back across the border. You can buy excellent holders for these from Adventure Trailers in Prescott, AZ, but they are not cheap. I have one mount and plan to buy a second. I'm going to mount one on each side of the front of my V nose, and then a LP tank on the tongue in the middle.

the reason for not being able to buy scepter cans is they are not carb compliant and scepter didn't want to have to redesign their cans. they used to state that on their website. btw scepter is a Canadian company. I have 2 of their cans. sure wish I could buy more, the best plastic cans ever made. highdesertranger

I can't really say, I've had mine for many years and bought all of them used.

I still see them for sale at yard sales fairly often, and if they're no longer available new, I may pick up a few spares.

yeah offgrid, they have not been available here for years, and the used ones that I have seen are all rusted up on the inside. highdesertranger

Would it be worth the trouble to try reconditioning the rusted cans, like the automotive gas tanks? If the new compliant spouts are crap, I guess using a pump would work well...from can to gen or other. I found a 1.25 gal Scepter plastic can while walking my dogs last week, but the spout (compliant type I guess) was busted and stuck on no flow, and the reviews on this particular spout is bad so I'm hesitant to buy a new one.....the can is solid. I'm going to search for a cap instead of a spout if they make one so I can at least carry some gas in it.

The ones I see seem to rust at the seems. Pretty hard to save it once the seem deteriorates.

I have some newer plastic "safety" cans with the silly new spouts. One type is nearly impossible to pour without spilling and using two hands. It's a stupid design and highly unsafe! Another has a funky narrow spout that got stuck in the fuel filler of my '86 E150. Had a devil of a time getting it out without drenching myself i raw gas!
So I ordered this spout kit to see if it is better. It'll be hear Thursday.

we can all thank carb for this mess and then the epa for making it nation wide. highdesertranger

I'd be interested in how it works out. I cut the spout off and was wrong about the flow mechanism location and design, so I have 3 pieces to put together with JB Weld to make a cap. Hope it works.
