Saw one yesterday and it sure looked roomy. This one was a 4cyl diesel with hitop, but don't think an adult could stand inside. As the door opened we could tell they were camping, if not living in it. Didn't get a chance to talk to them, as she was doing the "gotta go" dance.

Anyhoo, it looked good enough to mention :)

yup they are finally importable to the US(25 year old nonsense...), Canadians have had them for years. along with the mitsubishi delica, which i prefer. and own 2wd SWB gas american version of. i almost bought a the american version of the 4x4 gas toy but didn't like the interior or feeling driving it, it just felt sloppy granted it was a farm truck with 250k on it.
there are some super high top ones that you can stand in out there but i'm sure they bring big money. i hear people with standard roof 4x4s complaining about clearance at parking garages, drive throughs and such just with 2" lifts and bigger tires.
they are available in long and short wheel base, chassis cab and pickup.
both the toy and mitsu are great offroad and it's not uncommon to see them places jeeps with bigger tires can't get to.
nice short wheel base, meaning way harder to get high centered and a tighter turning radius.
i'm not sure how easy motor parts are to get for the diesel toys since no truck/van was ever sold stateside. but it's a toyota and a diesel it should be reliable
there's also 2wd class c versions, i bet those would cost more than a new van just to import.
i also remember seeing pop tops for the low roof hiace when i when i was looking at delica stuff too

as you can tell i like little Japanese cabovers

there may not be a lot of these in the US but there are millions of these around the world so parts should never be a problem. The great thing about the 2.4 or the 2.8 diesel that they come with, is they are very efficient, 25 to 30 miles per gallon. Even the 2.4 gaz one does pretty good. They are available in a pop top as well. They sell off X rentals here in NZ with well over 400,000 kms, at super high prices too so they seem to maintain there value and go forever very realiable.
