So I hope I can say this without tempting anyone to take it in a political direction. I mean it in a nonpolitical way, and I sincerely hope it stays there. Also, please excuse if clumsily expressed.

I'm guessing that today might be a pretty rough day for some veterans, especially those who served in Afghanistan. Just want to say we're thinking of you and please don't lose heart. You can't control what you can't control. You are still the best of us.

Not a rough day at all.Just the inevitable result of US foreign policy for the last 60 years.War is not about politics. It's about money for the M/I complex.Glad we are out.

It might be tough on gold star families who lost someone in Afghanistan, but I also think 1shemp is right.

I cosign with 1shemp.   Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”   How many times have our service men (non high ranking)  found themselves in this situation since 1950?

But when you are only concerned with making money, insanity doesn't matter as long as you are making money.  Calling it "Capitalism" is just a cop-out.

It may be worth reading the lyrics to Country Joe & the Fish, Vietnam Song at this point.  It sums this up perfectly.  And now there is an emerging industry with those begging for money on TV for injured soldiers.  You have to wonder what per cent is taken for "administrative cost", and what per cent reaches those for whom it was begged.

And if you are a Mom who lost her son,  some charming vet wearing The Congressional Medal of Honor may visit you and present you with a little gold star pin that cost less than $50 dollars (if that).   When raising that son cost:

Overall, non inflation-adjusted costs of raising a child through the age of 18 nearly doubled, from $70,000 in 1980 to $120,000 in 1990. Inflation adjusted, the increase is still over 10%.  Feel better now Mom ?

The Vietnam Song

Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Now you can go out and get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Listen to the song here.  The only rock protest song performed with a steam calliope.
