I've got some of those metal fittings for conduit shelters. They are way cheaper in Quartzsite than on that website. For instance, #FC-B connector on the site is $6...you can get them all day long in Q for under 3 bucks.
I suggest checking with a flea marketer to see where he's buying them.

I use PVC for lots of things, but conduit sure has its uses..

Rose....You should see some of the winds down in Q that tarp/conduit shelters withstand. ;)

Hi everyone :)
We landed in Flagstaff Sunday morning and I spent most of the day snoozing.
My old body is just flat worn out from the last week.

Day 4 (and videos) of the build will come about soon as I regain my wind.

Hi Jay
Thanks for posting as You go , We have a 2000 Maxi-Van and are getting ideas LOL , three years ago we just pulled all the seats but the last one , stuffed our gear behind it , threw down a full size air mattress and headed from Boston to Temecula , Ca. , then to Az. to join a gold mining club to camp and explore on there gold claims 9 1/2 mi. out in the Mohave .
Then just wandered around Az. checking out all the areas of that great state . Lake Havasu , Kingman , Bullhead City , Prescott ( met a van dweller that took us to a brook near the Starbucks and helped my wife find gold there ), Sedona ( came in on the " Back Road " , Jerome , Rich Hill ,
Black Canyon City ( Maggie Mine Road to Crown King )
The Highest point of our trip was camping at " Packsaddle & Windy Point above Chloride , Az, "
It was the best 9 weeks of our lives and the Maxi may only get 12 to 16 mpg but with the high clearance and Michelin LTX A/T's we never got stuck or had a flat ( good thing too , got home and found spare rim didn't fit LOL).

Howdy Bandit...Sounds like a grand adventure. Margie is itching to find a little "color", so we'll be checking out a few proven spots I know over in N.M. this summer.
Unfortunately, I'm not up to the rigors of actual mining anymore, so she'll have to settle for just a taste.

Hope our build inspires and finds y'all back out on the road again soon.

Surely you didn't got back to "Baastin" after seeing such great places :D

Hi Jay & Margie
Neither of us are in any condition for a lot of Hard Core Mining either , but we do enjoy a little Detector Swinging at our own pace , we will never get rich , but it beats sitting in New England freezing our butts off .
Bob
Ps
This is what keeps us swinging our Yard Sale Metal Detectors LOL .
This is NOT US

I woke at about 4 am this morning and my mind was clicking thru all the things we have stored under the bed. More STUFF that we kept, but haven't used in a while, things like a wireless router, a 7 port AC powered USB station, and there's more STUFF. My mechanic tool bag has a full set of screwdrivers and my tool box has a full set, plus some other "doubles"....how damn many do I really need.
We kept our 24" Vizio TV, planning to barter for a smaller one, and the AC powered DVD player....we need a freakin TV like we need another hole in the head.

So.....I'm going to call this "Day 4" of the build because space and weight are both factors in any van build.
Besides, we got the van so we could afford more travel, more adventures...You don't get that sitting in front of the idiot box.

(TV and DVD player just sold to the mgr right here at Burger King....$100, cha-ching)

Jay,
You need to secure your mike better, as I could hardly hear you on the second half of your video. Did you drop it?

Thanks, Bob

Yeah, I don't know what happened to the sound. I was using the old reliable Android....wasn't quite so reliable this time :s
I didn't know till it posted that it screwed me over :-/

Geeze, I gotta get a real camcorder soon as I can afford it.

No you dont need a camcorder. Its just more , well you know, JUNK. You're doing fine. Next thing you'll be buying all sorts of watches. :)

Hell, no only do I not care what time it is....I forgot how to tell time.

Next video I'll go back to my little Nikon.

Yeah, a watch is useless, we cant even remember what day it is. They sell a clock that has days on it instead of hours. The wife mentioned not remembering what day it is so I said if you would get a job you wouldn't have that problem. I got that special look.

Hey Jay!

Been following your posts here and just saw Day 4, Making Space. I couldn't agree more that we have to make space for that that we want in our lives. I've got a bunch of stuff from 5 years working as a computer tech that I'm gonna have to donate or give away. Most of the stuff is gonna make me happy by leaving. Gonna be nice lightening the load!

Thanks for all you add to this site!

Lugh

I hate to think of Lightening The Load before heading out , We have a 10 X 10 X 30 storage Locker packed solid .
What doesn't sell at the local flea markets this summer will be going to one in Ct. that sells Your stuff by the Row ( You call Fri. to reserve a row and once it hits the ground , You can not pick it back up , they own it ) . Last fall we brought down a full trailer load and were pleased with the outcome .

Regardless of quality, keep up the videos. They are very informative and just wanted to let you know we appreciate your updates.

Wow, thanks everyone. We really appreciate all the kind thoughts and support.
If the info we post helps even 1 person its more than worth doing.

At this time of the month bucks are getting a little tight, so we're not able to make much progress on the build....but we're sure having a great time and enjoying having the van.

In reality, our lives have for the better since getting out of the RV. Sure, there are a few things that are different, but that can be a good thing.
For instance, we show up at Burger King at 6 am for coffee and restrooms (and internet). Plus side is the good folks working here are friendly and interested in our "story". The manager has our coffee on the counter by the time we swing the door open. He comes out to chat when he has time and this morning coffee was "on him" :)
BUT....the big plus is that we are enjoying getting "moving" earlier in the day, something I was dreading since I liked to kick back in the RV with coffee.

Yesterday, a sweet  older lady at the library offered showers (no, we didn't stink or look in need, LOL). She also made a wonderful chef's salad with garlic bread, yum :D
She just wanted to hear about what we're doing and since she hasn't a computer, we've added her to our postcard list.
(If you're not doing postcards do consider it for the few like this lady. A few lines on a pretty picture card will make their day and create a great bond)

We're meeting some very nice people that I think we would have missed out on otherwise.
After all, travel isn't only about the places you see, but often more importantly, the super people you meet along the way.

We may have downsized in space, but I think we have supersized in other ways :D

Hi Jay
Not sure how your suspension on the van is but I know I have to beef ours up before driving the 2800 mi. back out to the sand box , as You know when a Semi passes You in one of these Maxi's .
They argue on other forums as to which is better , Air Bag's or a Roadmaster Active Suspension or a Dually kit ?
I like the idea of " Training Wheels " but here in Taxachusettes , any vehicle with over 5 tires requires a Commercial Registration , with a $ 129.00 DOT Inspection , flares , chocks , fire ext. etc. plus a DOT Medical Card Depending who ask's or stops you .
On one forum another member from Mass. tows a large racing boat to Florida a couple of times a year , and stops at the Ma. / Ct. Border and mounts up His Training Wheels for a safe stable ride .
I have chatted with him and He has Air Bags on the back and Timbrens on the front and has No Sway at all .

just rambling thoughts from reading through the first six pages.

Have fun in your travels and enjoy tinkering and building :)

On bed size. My wife and i sleep comfortably in our regular body chevy van in a pillows at rear/feet forward 54" wide by 75" full size bed with a side closet as seen below:

TCLawdInteriorSM.jpg

There is a measured 19" of under bed storage. The frame is 3/4" steel with a 1/4" ply bed platform (and froli-sleep system).

Originally i had the bed frame platform made of 2"x2" wood but i do believe the steel frame is lighter and yields a bit more space for storage.

The side closet is about 12" deep on the street side of bed and also helps cut down on road noise. Plenty of room in that ~12"d X ~30"h X ~75"L closet area.

Happy Travels,
Thom

Bob...Our 1 ton suspension is pretty firm and it has good gas shocks. We don't get much "wash" on the road at all.
I'm sort of a fan of air bags after having them on the RV. I was very impressed with the way it would tighten it up. Every forum has these arguments, but I'll go with what I can afford and what works for us :)
We're going to roll a while and see how it goes.

Thom....I like your setup. The steel frame is a consideration for a future improvement. I went with 2" X 3" wood for now, as it was a matter of what was available and immediate finances. Had not been hitting triple digits in Tucson, I might have looked around for some old bed frames to cut up for the frame...we were eager to get out of there, so wham bam, thank you ma'am and we were gone.
Do you also have cooking facilities aboard?
That's something we find very important, as we neither one like eating out much.
