Got into Erie yesterday and it rained all day. Supposed to rain off and on all week.  :(

But today was nice, so I went to the lakefront museum, and got some photos of the brig "Niagara" sailing off.

What a purdy ship she is. The photos do not do her justice.

:)

Ack, sorry for the typo in the title--I have Fred Flintstone fingers, which doesn't work well on a small netbook keyboard.....

Wow, now wouldn't that be fun!

Is that Lake Erie, or Erie, PA? Nice ship.

It's both, sorta.  Erie PA is technically on the shore of Presque Isle Bay, which is an arm of Lake Erie.

:)

It's no secret that I love sailboats, and this would have been a treat for me to see. Thanks for posting. :)

Cool.  I was in Duluth MN a couple years ago when the Tall Ships were in town.  Definitely worth checking out.
I remember some of the ships were looking for volunteers to work(and I do mean work! old school keeping it ship shape) for a season.  Anyone interested I'm sure you could google it and be a pirate for a year.

In St Pete FL I had a friend who lived on a sailboat. Alas, I never learned to sail: I always paddled my kayak instead.

The "Niagara" is certfied by the Navy as a training ship, and whenever she sails, about half the crewe are4 trainee volunteers.  And over half the crew is female.

They were getting readyb to sail as I toured the ship that morning, so all their stuff was strewn about on deck, and they were hauling up rigging and stuff all morning.

Since I did get to tour the "Niagara" at the museum before she set sail, I should post some pics of that:

The main deck

The mast rigging. The permanent lines were coated with tar to weatherproof them. The movable sail lines were hemp.

Cannon. The ship originally had twenty guns.  Now she carries two. They fire blanks.

Below deck. The ceiling here is only 5 feet tall.  The crew slept in hammocks tied to the ceiling: the officers had wooden bunks further forward.

Lenny thanks for those inside photos. Amazing ship. One day I'd like to go to a tall ship event

I've not been to Maine yet. I'm afraid a Florida boy like me might freeze to death, even in July.  ;)

I found it interesting--they were tied in to the mast with a rig very much like the ones I used to use back when I was a tree-climber (I was a professional tree-trimmer for a few years after high school).

Not what they used in the old days, to be sure.

Avast, ye scurvy bilge rat, all pirrrrates know that they be like Blackbeard, who put such a fright in all that they be surrendring with nary a shot fired.

;)

(As an aside, I've heard 18-pounders being fired---one of them makes, uh, a VERY loud bang. A broadside of ten at once must have been ear-shattering. I assume most naval gunners were probably half-deaf.)
